Go to the website of the company that makes your mouse and look for the driver. There is usually a link called drivers or drivers and downloads and is usually found under a download or support tab. Once you download the driver, install the driver and the mouse should be recognized.

MY LAPTOP DOES NOT DETECH TOSHIBA USB OPTICAL MOUSE U20

Try a different USB port. Is the mouse wireless? If so, make sure it has a line-of-sight to the receiver that is plugged into your USB port. Does the laser (on the bottom) light up? If not, check the batteries.

After not using my laptop for several months (it was plugged in however) my USB mouse will not work now when I boot up my Toshiba Satellite laptop.

Here are some trouble shooting steps you can try relatively easily....
If the mouse connects via a USB cable, try connecting it on another USB port while the laptop is on.
If it is an optical mouse, check to see if the LED(s) underneath are lit. Change ports until LED lights.
If you have another computer also with a USB mouse and it is working, try a mouse exchange. If the non-working mouse also does not work on the other computer and the mouse from the other computer works on your Toshiba Satellite laptop, the problem is likely with the non-working mouse.
Finally, If the non-working mouse is a wireless one, its battery may be dead. Try a new battery in it.
