The belt is a round leather belt and is joined by a wire staple. It passes over the pulley on the hand wheel, down through the slot in the table and a slotted plate goes into the table slot with the belt in the plate slot. The belt is than placed against the big pulley, turn the pulley and a lip on the pulley will pick up the belt and feed it into the groove of the pulley - that's it! (If the belt is too long, cut it to the correct length, pierce a new hole in it and feed the staple into the hole).

Spray wherever the squeak is coming from with a dry silicone lubricant called 'Jigaloo' or WD40 Dry Silicone Lubricant. It is also great for sliding windows.

Feed dogs don't work!

Many of the older machines had a long geared belt that operated the feed dogs. Turn the machine upside down, take the bottom off and check. If there's a belt there, check it for tautness and for useability. If there is a belt, take it off and try the sewing machine repair shops in Kazoo on S. Westnedge for a replacement.

Can you please date my singer treadle machine, serial number F9620856 and table top singer ,serial number EB976045. Thanks

The Singer UK site has a web site on the history of the company. This includes a list of when and where the machines were made based on their serial numbers. Start at http://www.singermachines.co.uk/faq/vintage-sewing-machine-serial-number-list/ and scroll to the bottom of the page for the links for serial numbers that start with 1 or 2 letters.

The F9620856 was built in 1920 and EB976045 was built in 1939. Both were manufactured in Clydebank, Scotland.

I hope this helps.

How to adjust belt tension on vintage Singer industrial sewing machine

When you say 'Vintage'-- how old are we talking about?

Please describe the belt...

Is this an old Pedal (or platform that you rock your feet, to make the drive pulley go around)
Is it a 'pedal' powered machine?-- one with a round leather belt?

If it is the latter--
Is that belt all dried out?-- or is it still supple and still providing a good surface to grip the grooves of the 2 pulleys?

Tell us more-- maybe we can help.

My Necchi supernova ultra mark 2 (50 year old) sewing machine's belt broke (13 inch length). I'm having trouble finding one on-line. Any idea where to get one?

I have the same machine and I see the belt has been replaced. It's a Singer belt. You might wanna try that.

Singer simaco 95-1 timing belt

I can't seem to get this thing posted. I have the same problem and have started contacting leather craftsmen to see if someone can fabricate the belt. We can't find the join and wonder if each end was shaved down and then overlayed and glued somehow to keep it all the same thickness. Let me know if you come up with anything.  Terry tergould@gmail.com
