Same problem here but decided to take the valve cover off and have a look at the rockers and what had happened on the left side cylinder the rods had bent from the backfiring, I realized the backfiring in this case was due to carbon build up in the combustion chamber that causes the gas to ignite before full compression so I removed the head and sure enough there was a good 1/16th of an inch of carbon build up so the next thing I did was check the other chamber and it too had some build up so cleaned them up purchased a set of rods for each side and installed and adjusted the valves to spec. Now while taking care of the obvious I poked around to figure out the cause and after looking at the air intake I noticed some gummy black/brown goo and went further and looked at the seal on the plastic cover and realized the dirt was making its way between the filter edge and the plastic cover and that is caused because the plastic clips have warped from the heat and constant pressure over the years allowing for a loose fitting cover and thus access for fine dust and dirt to get it. now to correct that you can get all the plastic replacement parts at a hefty price or simply add one sided 1/16" - 1/8" soft foam rubber insulation tape onto the base to where the filter sits this will make up for the gap. make sure that every time you clean or replace your filter you also inspect the condition of the newly created gasket you do not want it to fall apart and make its way into the combustion chamber since the rubbery insulation was not designed for high heat environment like an engine.

date, the valve guide gets pushed out because of the build up and eventually will not let the rocket arm rock back and thus bends rod. clean the valve shank, lube and replace, then push the valve guide back in place. I use the flat side of a chisel and slowly tapped it back in place but be careful not to nick the shaft.

Valve is not opening right, hence the popping, the rocker arm may need to be tighten or is broke

try adjusting again, bring to top dead on compression stroke, check lash if in spec try open up a little, may be to tight. but it has to area of problem unless valve is bent or not seating right ...can u adjust and run and adjust again .. that way u can play with settings,

21hp intek v-twin runs only with choke on full

You are not getting enough fuel.... by choking it you are enriching the mixture with less air , more fuel. Some where in the fuel system or carbureator something is still plugged.Or the mixture screw is too far in.
