Marantz DV4100 DVD player - after 30-40 minutes of playing goes into a loop and displays a 'disk error' message. The player freezes and the drive seems to go into erratic movement. Should I bother getting this repaired or should I replace ?

My DV4100F/T1B – made in Hungary- VN100204028712- has never performed properly since I bought it from Richer Sounds in 2003 for about £200. When I first used the player, it would play normally for 40 minutes or so and then the image would freeze, also a mechanical sound would become audible as the digital display skipped through successive chapters on the disc before stopping and displaying ‘disc error’. Re-booting another disc led to the same problem occurring after a shorter time of around 20 minutes. Sometimes, using ‘setup’ or other features via the remote during playback would trigger the fault.

I’ve tried cleaning the lens with isopropanol using a Q-tip. This improved the audio quality as there had also been a slight hum, but has had little effect on the main problem. When stalling occurs, there is a distinctive mild clunking noise that occurs before ‘disc error’. Now the problem occurs much sooner, after 10 to 15minutes, so I really should’ve taken it back to the shop. Interesting that others note a similar problem. Is it worth repairing?

SOURCE: Samsung DVD-4600 DVD/VCR Player

My Smasung DVD/VCR Combo stopped reading DVDs because of a dirty read head. It started by only playing disks sometimes, and progressed to never playing disks. I assumed it was a dirty laser lens so I bought a lens cleaner set. Unfortunately my player wouldn't play the cleaner disk.

So I took it apart and cleaned the laser lens manually with some isopropyl alcohol (the clenser that came with my cleaning disk), and a lens cloth (that came with my glasses). Just open the case (starting with the screws in the back) and remove the snap in cross panel that obscures the lens of the DVD portion. Put a drop of cleanser on the lens and gently wipe it with the cloth.

Oh and by the way, I take no responsibility if you break your own player while following my instructions. My own DVD player was far out of warranty at the time I cracked it open.

SOURCE: Daewoo DVRS05 Recorded DVD won't play in OTHER DVD players

my suggestion from reading other forums is that these players sometimes have problems finalizing the disc.. you could try making a copy of the disc in a computer to see if this fixes the promlem or maybe media these use dvd+r and has a lot of compatibility issues with dvd players.

SOURCE: solutions to incorrect disk error c105 & c104

Hello gjbrokke,

First make sure the disc is compatible with the dvd player (CD-R+ , or CD-R - )

Second make sure the region code of the dvd you burned is compatible with the dvd region settings on your dvd player.

One of those two are preventing the disc from playing in your sansui player.

Usually means the lens needs cleaning. Occasionally, it's a case of the drive binding. Try running a lens cleaner through it first. You'll want the type that's got optical quality brushes built in to the bottom of the disk.

If that doesn't fix it, it's likely a drive issue, which means it's time for replacing the unit - costs more to fix than replace.

Sony DVD RECORDER/PLAY WON'T PLAY

Dvd players are only made to last a couple of years(the laser goes bad).If you play scratched disc's it won't last that long.Hopefully you didn't pay alot for the player, and if you did then you can get the laser repaired but its expensive.I usually wait until the things go on sale and pick one up for 20 or 30 dollars. When the laser burns out after repeated use I just buy a new one because fixing them is more expensive and unless you want to continue having problems its easier to buy new. These guys that put alot of money in these units are just wasting their money.

Playing recordable dvd

My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!

Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
