Question about Mitsubishi WS-65809 65" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have replaced the IC's and the pico fuses and checked all of the convergence resistors and I am still getting the same bowing only from the top. Is there anything else that could cause this its the exact same as when I had old IC's in.

So you are saying the bowing can be adjusted out in the advanced convergence menu? I haven't tried that yet did think you could adjust bowing.

I meant didn't think you could adjust bowing in advanced convergence menu

I would double check the pins on your convergence IC's for any solder bridges and torn traces. Also it is possible that you might have missed a resistor.

I went through every pin and made sure it looked good. I did have once trace that didnt come out good and I created a jumper wire from that pin to the next solder point on the trace and verified continuity from the pin to the following solder point. Also checked for cross solders and it looks good also. Every convergence resistor desoldered from the board and checked with ohm meter they where all very close with in .001 of each other and the new resistors I received in the kit.

Can you get into the convergence menu and adjust anything at all? Also, are all 3 colors bowing?

  • ihughes747 Apr 01, 2011

Yes I can move the convergence in all directions and it does seem like all colors are bowed.

Since you can adjust, you will have to adjust the convergence all the way in one color at a time. It will be time consuming, but worth it.

Yes you can. Unless the IC's are damaged. But since you replaced them and you saw that you can move all 3 colors, you should be good to go. Just take your time. I would start with the green.

Hard to say what might be the problem, but I would be checking for the following:

a) verify all fuses (pico fuses) are not blown. They look like yellow, or green resistors typically and should be marked with some sort of "Fxxx" designator

b) Verify resistors around the STK chips are of the right value

c) Verify your soldering connections

d) It is possible the part you installed was defective. Verify you cannot move any color in any direction. (horizontal or vertical)

e) Try to verify if power is getting to the IC - if so, then likely an IC problem. If not, likely a fuse problem.

f) Finally get a schematic and verify the pinout from the STK chip to the red, blue, green connectors to ensure you did not accidently remove a surface mount resistor.

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.
