Question about GE Profile 25.6 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water - Stainless-Steel

1 Answer

GE DSS25KSRESS SIde by Side Refrigerator - about 4 years old. Problem with Freezer. It does not consistently hold temperature, every few days the top part warms up and melts ice which drips down to lower part of freezer and refreezes. Also when that happens, water line freezes and items in the lower part of Refrigerator freeze. It appears the circulation fan is not working enough of the time, is there a control sensor unit for that? OR is this a more serious issue here?

This is not under warranty anymore. We actually took it from a friend that said they were having trouble with it and maybe even suspected an issue with their daughter standing inside once in awhile. Do you think the timer, which you referenced as located in the toe kick area could have been damaged, I may pull that and see if it needs to be replaced?

The frost free function is not working consistently causing the coils to coat with ice. The usual cause is a failure of the thermostat for the coils or the heating elements or the timer which is often mounted on the front rail at the toe kick area. Unless you are handy at electrical and have access to appliance parts this is probably not DIY... cost is often $250 which is far less than new refrigerator. Also check if your warranty might be valid or any maintenance contract.

The timer is usually fairly well protected and mounted on the backside of the rail at the toe kick. They often have a shaft that is plastic showing... often about 3/8 inch diameter witha ratchet like face. If you can find this, watch it for several hours aand see if it turns. It will usually be once per 24 hours. If it doesn't, feel if it is slightly warm indicating the motor is getting power. Since there are three major components involved, the timer, the thermostat that senses the coils have been warmed where the ice is evaporated, and the heaters themselves. One thing to check is that the DRAIN that drains into a pan is free. If the water melted puddled under the freezer coils it might re-frost faster. It should drain to a pan underneath and evaporate from there.

I have a GE Profile Side by Side TPX21PR/Tpx21BR. The freezer is not freezing ice cream or even bread, but the meat seems fine. There has been a loud noise emanating from the unit for over a year.

Hi,

Kindly provide few more details so that i could provide more appropriate solution to your problem :-

1. How old is the unit?
2. Kindly hear the noise - Is it from the freezer section or upper back or lower back of the refrigerator?
3. Do you hear the compressor running?
4. Any problem with temperature in lower section or is it limited to freezer section?

Let me know,so that we could proceed.

Hope i helped you.

HI no these techs are wrong, you need to change the motherboard, gas/freon leaks are less than 2% of failures on GE refrigerators. Change the board and you will be fine.

Self Diagnostics
To enter Self Diagnostic mode, both temperature control panel displays must be illuminated. A display
can be illuminated by pressing an adjacent temperature adjustment button. When both displays are
illuminated, set the freezer and refrigerator temperature settings to 5. Simultaneously press and hold all
4 temperature adjustment buttons for approximately 3 seconds. A flashing 0 in the refrigerator and
freezer displays will indicate that the refrigerator is in Self Diagnostic mode.

For temperature control panels with single-digit displays, the COLDER temperature adjustment button
will increment the numbers up and the WARMER temperature adjustment button will increment the
numbers down. Use the freezer temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in the
freezer display. Use the refrigerator temperature adjustment buttons to enter the test code number in
the refrigerator display. When a test code has been entered, the displays will flash to confirm the test.
Press the HOLD button for 3 seconds to begin the test.

When you say "The items in the freezer are cold with some ice on them. I have tried emptying the ice tray, but that does not help." Is there literally ice from the ice bucket dripping on the food and refreezing, or is there a layer of frost on the food? the noise you are hearing is most likely due to the evaporator fan motor running at alternating low and high speeds. This is a variable speed motor, but there could be quite a few reasons why the motor is not rotating at regulated speeds. the fan motor itself, a faulty thermistor, you could also have an issue with your main control board, or least of all a wiring issue.
You would be wise to have it inspected by a reliable refrigerator repair service, to at least determine what the problem is for certain.

Something to check for. Is the top of the refrigerator door lower than the freezer door? If so the ref. light may not be turning off all the time. Pull bottom panel off to expose hinges. The ref hinge should have an adjuster. Adjust door up to be level with freezer.
