Microwave stops after 15 to 20 seconds and dont want to turn back on

common failure and usual suspects include:

Diode most use inside for voltage change from AC-DC.

A bad large AC filter cap in most models inside the unit.

A bad Magnetron or the inverter board connected to it that does the heating.

Typical filter cap used--shapes will vary from round to oval and usually if bad it will be puffed up---it can be like the diode tested with a ohm meter--good or bad.

Typical Magnetron, cannot usually be tested unless it is burned and connects to the inverter that provides it voltage and controls it.

No lights - Acts Like It Has No Power At All

see the diagram and pictorial and proceed with common sense:
1) test the fuse for open or band contact with VOM,see the diagram attached how to do it
2)check the switch door hook or door release button, when they are broken they do not touch the switch, and will NOT start. test for open
see the diagram

Wont turn on. Microwave was cooking for 1 1/2 minutes when it suddenly turned off. Will not turn back on. Tried several outlets. It is the microwave, not the outlet.

I had a fire in the microwave and now it doesn't turn on. Is there a reset button or do I have to go buy a new one? cbierke@gmail.com

It sounds like an internal fuse has blown. Unplug unit and carefully open the top cover to provide access to the A.C. power cord entry point. Hopefully the fuse is located in that area and is the older style 1/2" long glass or ceramic body with metal endcap on each end. ONLY REPLACE WITH A FUSE THAT HAS IDENTICAL ELECTRICAL RATINGS! After replacing the fuse and top cover reconnect the unit to the A.C. outlet and check to see if it is still dead. Still dead = repair shop time.

NOTE: Use a "fused" A.C. outlet strip (usually 6 outlets with circuit breaker) for your "after fuse replaced" testing. This gives you additional protection against accidentally tripping a breaker in your homes electrical panel.

My oven keeps blowing the main fuse (the one behind the grille). How can I troubleshoot ? I know how to use a AC/DC tester, please advise next step. Thanks

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead several seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

How is the capacitor connected to the magnetron, the diode and the trasnformer in a Maytag microwave - MMV5156AA

The magnetron is a tube with a heater/cathode element in the middle of a series of scallop-like grooves that surround the cathode, but spaced away from the cathode. A small, insulated wire protrudes into one of the scallops and extracts the microwave energy that passes down the wave-guide, past a fan-like device called a stirrer that scatters the energy just before entering the cooking cavity. The magnetron requires a low voltage/high current AC heater supply plus a 3000 to 5000 volt DC supply that is hooked to the cathode of the magnetron. The transformer supplies both voltages as AC waveforms. The diode makes the HV AC supply into HV DC by passing current in one direction only and the capacitor stores/smooths that HV DC into relatively stable DC for connection to the cathode of the magnetron. The other side of the DC supply is tied to case ground as is the outer case of the magnetron. This arrangement is typical of all microwave ovens (and radars).

Diffrence bwetween ac in volts and dc

DC is direct current and AC is alternating current.

eg; 12 volts DC stays 12 volts constantly, positive or negative.

12 volts AC (at 60 Hertz or cycles per second) alternates from positive to negative then back to positive voltage again 60 times per second.
