Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

1 Answer

I have a troy built 21" rear wheel drive push mower. My problem is that it will not drive its self. I pick up the back end and the wheels take off no problem. But when I put it on the ground it does not drive.I turned it over and made sure there was nothing on the drive bar. So where do I go next with it?

The self propel cable needs to be adjusted. Some of these units have an adjustment built into it. You should look in your Instruction manual. Also it could be that the belt has some wear and is slipping. The easiest thing would be to take it to a repair shop and ask them if they could adjust it for you and maybe check the belt. Hope this helps.

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

Drive belt comes out

There is an adjustment to tighten up the drive belt tensioner pulley. You should be able too see it after you remove the safety shield. Tighten adjustment nut to snug belt.

Please describe how to remove back tire from lawn tractor troy built

Hello,

The back wheels are held on by a bolt threaded into the rear axle. To gain access you need to pop off the little black cap with a screwdriver, Then with a 12mm socket remove the bolt and large washer( used to hold the plastic cap), then slide the wheel off. If it wont slide off, due to corrosion ( Rust), then soak it with WD-40 or some type of penetrating oil. Note, some tractors have a keyed axle, if yours does....dont lose it, and when you reinstall the rear wheel, install the key AFTER you install the wheel. Do it from the out side NOT the inside, or it will ( could) push off when reinstalling the wheel. If that happens you wont have any drive on that side.

Hope this was helpful

My troy built 210 6.75 hp mower self propelled mower doesnt pull

remove the front black plastic plate that is stamped self propelled and replace the wheel drive belt that attaches the engine pulley (above blade) to the transmission pulley (found under the cover). When you buy the belts, pick up two or three as I seem to go through a couple per season. Hopes this helps

Front wheels lock up when pull mower backwards

Typically self-propelled mowers are propelled using the front wheels, which only turn forward. Pulling the mower back while the front wheels are turning will damage the drive gears. It's best to raise the front wheels slightly off the ground before pulling back.
