I suggest to start checking the RAM. If you have multiple sticks take only one out at a time, and try to start the computer.

I've had nothing but good fortune with Asus as a motherboard manufacturer. A very reliable group of people.
The biggest problem with aging motherboards is bad/burnt out capacitors. The bad news is if that's the case it's unfixable and that it's like fixing an old car. Sure you can replace that one bad part but odds are you have a couple dozen old parts in there that are also just about to fail. The good news is if you're comfortable with electrical engineering you can swap out a bad capacitor, if you can identify it and you think it's worth your time to do it. It's a fun project but it involves time, some gear, the right part, and some exposure to semi-toxic substances.
Without getting long winded over the details, the vast majority of capacitors (the little cylinders that stand up on the motherboard) are chemical in nature. They're wicked cheap but they burn out or wear down with age, and when they're done it's over. You'll see motherboard vendors today proud of their SOLID CAPACITORS, because they're more expensive but vastly more reliable as well as long lived.
I'd browse around NEWEGG.COM and find a 'newish' motherboard that allows you to use all your old hardware. That way you're only in for about 30-50$ but you're on more solid ground regarding hardware standards and hardware reliability. I think it's your path of least resistance, but it's really depending on how much tinkering you like to do.
Best of luck. William

Hp pavilion ze1210 intermittently boots up or will not turn on at all.

ok it's a laptop., old.
let me guess 2003 made, square 4:5 screen
XP removed, (smart idea) Linux installed.
I guess the screen is 100% dead, not one pixel ever glows, right?
no text, ,no BIOS screens on demand, (esc key pressed, power on)

1: step 1 is always remove the main big battery. run now?
2: try external VGA screen yet, to see if the old internal screen is dead? see that VGA jack on the rear, and the hot function key that turns it on, bingo.?
(use a flash light to see if screen internal has data but the
CCFL back lamp is dead.?)
4: if bios is dead and both screens fail, what is next.?
19vdc from the power pack must reach the guts (MOBO)
if not all HP lap tops die. use a voltmeter or get a spare power pack
many power packs this old are now bad. 14 years old,
the can be good, bad, or weak. weak is bad.
5: sparks is a bad thing, in all cases, when heard it needs service.

Asus mb wl300 amd 64 4000+ won't boot to bios.

To make sure it isn't anything else, pull all cards, and drive cables from the board so the only thing left connected is the power connectors to the motherboard, the speaker, and the power button. Pull all the ram cards.

Now power up the computer. If you hear a series of beeps then the computer recognizes there is no ram on the board. At this point I would take the power supply out and have it tested. If you do not hear a series of beeps I would still have the power supply tested as it could be the 12v is fine but the 5 and 3.3 volt side is bad.

If power supply tests good then I would replace both the motherboard and processor. You take a risk of burning a new processor if it's the motherboard causing the problems.

My gateway desktop PRB 510S, if I turn it off and unplug it or electricity goes off, the computer wont start back again. Wont do anything. No lights no fan, nothing. Then 5 to 10 minutes after I turn it on...

Try connecting a different power supply to it. If the same situation repeats, then it's an internal (motherboard) problem. If the problems go away, then the power supply needs to be replaced.

6 years... I'm surprised the PSU even lasted that long! The power supply is the cheapest part of the PC and usually one of the first parts to fail. Don't worry, a replacement power supply is not too expensive. Good luck!

by mb pwr connector do you mean the swich on the pc case that you press to turn it on or do you mean the large block connector form the power supply ?

If you mean the case switch then you have a faulty one that is sendinga constant signal and locking up the power supply

Plugged computer back in after move and won't start. green light in mb on.

Actually, there is nothing you can do with the hard drive. If its shorting out the power supply when its pugged in then it is defective. However, most hard drives carry a 3 year warranty from the manufacture. If the drive is younger then 3 years old, I would call the manufacture and get it repaired or replace. Hope this helps . . .

No boot, New PS, Green light on MB lights, No Fans running

Bottom line: Either your power supply or (hopefully not) the mother board has gone bad.
Replace power supply (remove old one), take to local independent computer shop, ask them for new unit. Should be around $50.00. - no more. After reinstall, if still no fans, boot, etc. Replace motherboard or buy a new machine. MB's installed probably will run you around $250.00-ish.
Good luck.

My gateway 700 xl doesnt boot

Unplug the power from you 700xl and from you monitor. Try removing the cmos battery and reinstalling it. Then, plug everything back in and try restarting. If it continues to give you the yellow light, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, especially if it is more than two years old.

Another thing to consider is if your power supply is underpowered for the number of external devices you have plugged into it (i.e., cd, dvd, external hard drives, printers, pci cards, etc). Gateway installed very low powered power supplies in their 700xl desktop computers. Usually only around 250 watts maximum.

If you are replacing the power supply with another 250 watt maximum power supply, and you have a lot of external devices plugged in, you may need at least a 350 watt power supply....if your CMOS battery is not the problem.
