I would try to start it up in safe mode. This can tell you whether it's a display (physical) issue, or a driver (software) issue. You can do this by hitting the F8 button as soon as you start the computer and it brings up a prompt. At the Advanced system prompt, choose "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if it works then. If it does, I would suggest you undo an changes in the drivers that you made before.

Thinkpad T41 with XP-sp3: No sound / working fine until yesterday

Hi. Try plugging in an external speaker just to test the issue. It could be just the speaker of the laptop is having the problem. If you were able to hear the sound from the external speaker then the problem is the built in speaker of the computer. If there is no sound coming out to external speakers. Try to reinstall the driver of your soundcard.

Lcd screen stuck in external screen mode

How to use the function (Fn) keys on the keyboard - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p

Switching the display output location.
Switch between the computer display and an external monitor. If an external monitor is attached, the computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
  • External monitor (CRT display)
  • Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
  • Computer display (LCD)
Notes:
  • For any operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
  • This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
  • This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the following procedure is needed:
  1. When you log on to Windows 2000 and Windows XP for the first time, press Fn + F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Since in Windows 2000 and Windows XP multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs, each user needs to select the function in the initial setup window when logging on for the first time.
  2. If the Fn + F7 key combination have been assigned to a presentation scheme function, start Presentation Director, and change the settings.

My IBM Thinkpad with windows xp when turned on has many colors streaming on the screen. It will not load and what worries me is losing music, video & picture files. What can be done to retrieve the...

Might be video card problem or something that is connected with your video is getting fault, dirty or loose contact is a big candidate. If you can test it using external monitor if it have external monitor port try that first. If external monitor works then back up your files immediately using external media. CD, dvd, flash drive or in another external hard drive.

Second option is to take out the hard drive and hook it into a USB hard drive adapter or a USB enclosure. And retrieve your files if you want on another working computer.

Then the laptop should go to a repair. If you are not so sure of doing this, have your friends that have knowledge on this assist you or bring it to a reputable shop.

Just for an input.

Mousepad, right clicker problems on ibm thinkpad t41

you can try looking at the manufacturers website for a driver update to your trackpoint http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-46258.html#mouse

Try turning off the tap to click option. This should resolve accidentally dragging things where they don't need to be.

Better option...if you're using this laptop at home just invest in a wireless mouse and set the laptop to disable the trackpoint when an external mouse is detected.

IBM T41. black screen

It's a common problem with flex of the unit causing the video chip to coming un-soldered from the motherboard. It's possible to repair but very difficult requiring luck and specialist equipment.
