Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
"Unable to init" is caused by a problem with the carriage (the mechanism that holds the print head and moves it across the paper) causing it not to move. This could be something as simple as a foreign object getting in to the printer and obstructing the carriage, but unfortunately is more commonly failure of the carriage motor itself, or the electronics that control the motor.
The user manual for your machine (available from the Brother website if you've lost it) will show you how to check for obstructions - basically lift the upper part of the machine up (not just the scanner lid but the part you need to lift to access the printer/network cable connection) and check the rectangular opening you can see.
If it isn't a simple obstruction, then I'm afraid there is no simple solution to this problem.
Dismantling these machines isn't staright forward and parts are very difficult to obtain and very, very expensive, so much so that 99 times out of a 100, it isn't cost effective to repair.
You could approach a Brother service agent, but it's highly probably that they will charge you more than buying an equivalent brand new machine.

There are several issues that pertain to this code, including a service update. If your printer is still under warranty – visit your local ASC, find one here, this issue is covered! First off, the Service Update, the encoder strip needs to be cleaned with a lint free cloth. The encoder strip is responsible for relaying the position of the print head to the main pcb. If the encoder strip gets dirty, many different problems can occur. The encoder strip is exposed, which allows grease, paper dust, finger prints, ink, etc. to get onto the encoder strip. (The white strip when you open the scanner cover)
If the machine still errors, the encoder strip needs to be replaced – Part Number LS4467001
If the machine still errors, replace the carriage PCB assembly – Part Number LS6543001
If the machine still errors, replace the Printhead – Part Number LK3211001
If the machine still errors, replace the Main PCB assembly – Part Number LT0284011
