"Unable to init" is caused by a problem with the carriage (the mechanism that holds the print head and moves it across the paper) causing it not to move. This could be something as simple as a foreign object getting in to the printer and obstructing the carriage, but unfortunately is more commonly failure of the carriage motor itself, or the electronics that control the motor. The user manual for your machine (available from the Brother website if you've lost it) will show you how to check for obstructions - basically lift the upper part of the machine up (not just the scanner lid but the part you need to lift to access the printer/network cable connection) and check the rectangular opening you can see.
If it isn't a simple obstruction, then I'm afraid there is no simple solution to this problem.
Dismantling these machines isn't staright forward and parts are very difficult to obtain and very, very expensive, so much so that 99 times out of a 100, it isn't cost effective to repair.
You could approach a Brother service agent, but it's highly probably that they will charge you more than buying an equivalent brand new machine.
Sorry.

SOURCE: machine error 48 or init unable 48

There are several issues that pertain to this code, including a service update. If your printer is still under warranty – visit your local ASC, find one here, this issue is covered! First off, the Service Update, the encoder strip needs to be cleaned with a lint free cloth. The encoder strip is responsible for relaying the position of the print head to the main pcb. If the encoder strip gets dirty, many different problems can occur. The encoder strip is exposed, which allows grease, paper dust, finger prints, ink, etc. to get onto the encoder strip. (The white strip when you open the scanner cover)
If the machine still errors, the encoder strip needs to be replaced – Part Number LS4467001
If the machine still errors, replace the carriage PCB assembly – Part Number LS6543001
If the machine still errors, replace the Printhead – Part Number LK3211001
If the machine still errors, replace the Main PCB assembly – Part Number LT0284011

How to clear "unable to init.73" in brother dcp-j125 printer?

Hi
This is a mechanical problem of some description. Open the scanner cover and remove any foreign objects and paper scraps from inside the machine. Then, disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes and reconnect it. This should clear the error, but if it does not repeat the procedure making absolutely certain there is nothing in the printer obstructing the paper path.
You can get a manual for this machine here:
http://data.manualslib.com/pdf2/36/3557/355673-brother/dcpj125.pdf?5f68814c3d046699f5763ce9725a25e1
and there is a manual resetting procedure that you might try here:

Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya

My brother j220 displaying unable to init.49 how can i remove it

The machine has either a mechanical problem or there is something in the machine such as a paper clip or scrap paper.
open up machine and inspect it. use compressed air if needed to clean everything out. If this does not work then unplug for 5 minutes and then re-power on and see if it comes back if so you will need service on it.
here you will find user guide to further assist
