Question about GE JVM1653 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE Over-The-Range JVM1653BD Error code -FS-

This has happened a few times over the years: The microwave is cooking something when the oven shuts off, blasts four long tones and displays -FS- in place of the time. The four tones repeat about every thirty seconds until I clear the error code with the clear button.

Today I had a couple hamburgers in the oven, and had gone through the ground meat cooking cycle. (I rarely ever use this one, #3.) It stopped and prompted me to stir the meat, so I opened the door, removed the covered Corning dish, drained the juice off and flipped the burgers. Recovered and placed in the oven and cooked until the clock was counted down to 45 seconds left. Opened the door, added some buns to be warmed up and hit start again. Cooked for maybe 45 seconds, and instead of the Done beeps I got the -FS- stuff.

The oven functions in every way properly after I have cleared this error.

I can put too much food in the oven and have the frozen veggies (#5) give me an error -- but it's been awhile since I experienced this. I think it tells me I have too much food in there, so that's an entirely different situation from the -FS- error I am occasionally experiencing.

Any ideas of what this is?

Thank you very much for the answer to my question -- I am comforted in knowing it isn't a precursor to a breakdown, or major repair job ahead, but probably caused very occasionally by an excessive bit of steam maybe condensing on a cool surface.

"F5: Shorted humidity sensor, will occur if humidity sensor is detected as being shorted continuously over 5 seconds."

It may be excessive moisture on the sensor, or it may short from time to time internally, then "unshort" when it cools or dries.

Until it fails consistently, I probably wouldn't worry about it.

If and when you or someone you know want to check and/or replace it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

I would check the door switches for a faulty switch. If it were condensation on the control panel. I would think it would have dried out by now unless it has damaged the control board.

GE Spacemaker microwave oven - Sensor error

Hello :

Many models of the GE microwave have sensors that can detect humidity from the foods you are cooking. This allows the microwave to make adjustments to the power levels used to cook your food. If "Sensor Error" appears, you should either press "Clear" to cancel the mode or leave the food in the appliance longer to give the microwave more time to detect the food.

Press "Time Cook" to manually enter the time if you receive an error message when trying to use the "Sensor Reheat" mode of your GE microwave. The error message may be caused by the food item being too large or too small to detect

good luck .

Microwave shuts off after a few seconds.

I am surprised that the GE seervice tech did not explain to you why the microwave will still cook. By saying that transformer is damaged or shot really means that the internal windings may be shorted together so the transformer no longer has as many good windings to produce the original power it did when it was new. That is pretty clear. It will still function a little but the protection circuits inside the microwave would start to shut it down when it overloads by trying to pull more current than the windings inside the transformer can handle. You can replace the transformer yourself if you are a do it yourselfer and are confident around unplugging the transformer with All Power Off and unscrewing a couple of screws that hold it in place. It is pretty straightforward you just need to find the correct transformer (maybe you can buy one from GE or go to www.mwoparts.com which carry all the parts in microwaves for all models especially name brands like yours. Taking the cover off is of course easy. Good luck. Let me know how you do or if I can help you in any other way.

GE JVM240 microwave - shut door, fan runs, can't set timer or cook

The "main" relay on the control circuit board is stuck (shorted) and needs to be replaced.

We regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We are all in the same boat. It is very annoying. I think it is a sensor tripping.
