SOURCE: homelite 290 manual
I have to ask, does it have a chain oiler?
Oregon Bar & Chain Selector
Your model is listed. HTH

chain is too tight on the bar or is lacking lubrication oil. loosen up the bar nuts and back off the chain tensioning screw a touch. make sure the bar oil reservoir is full and the chain is receiving oil when its running.

I found a parts listing here but it does not list an "Operators Manual":
Homelite/Ryobi.com (authorized parts supplier)
https://www.gardnerinc.com/recons/disclaimer-lg.php - Agree; Choose “Product Line”; “Select OEM” & “Select Catalog” both to “Homelite Consumer Products”. A drop down list appears; self explanatory from here.
The numbers Homelite & Ryobi use do not match the numbers everyone posts. A careful inspection of your saw should find
something that matches.
An Internet search proved fruitless. The Arboristsite (beg for manuals) thread netted no help. You might try there:
Beg for manuals thread (ArboristSite) (free to join)
Join and post your request. There will be heat and barbs about your homeowner saw, but someone will almost certainly provide one.
I suggest you submit your request here first:
Contact us Homelite.com
I suspect they will provide a pdf file for your saw, free of charge.
I am sorry i was not more helpful but it was not for lack of trying. If you do find a source please reply back so I may provide a better answer in the future. Good Luck

After inquiring with Homelite's parts distributor, I have found out the Homelite does NOT offer any service repair parts for this model. A little bit of research tells me why. Home Depot retails this unit for less than $30 here in the USA. To compare, replacement blades for a similar product made by Poulan/Weedeater sell for $26 plus shipping. My guess is that Homelite considers this a disposable unit.
If it was working well for you, go buy another one. For $30, you can't go wrong.
