The wpa key is the security key you need to connect to your wireless network. It should be on a label on your wireless router and say network key or security key

I have a persistent red light on the wireless adaptor, but the xbox is not recognising that it is plugged in. There is no option for the xbox to search for a network

Blinking green means initializing, steady green means it's found a wireless access point and connected.

Steady red means it's looking for a wireless network (wireless access point) which means you have to configure your SOHO router with an SSID that's broadcast so the wireless xbox NIC can find it.

I think you may have confused a comment I made - the xbox can be connected to your SOHO router by either a WIRE (ethernet cable) OR Wireless NIC (network interface card). If you're using one, disconnect the other!

If you have wireless enabled on your SOHO (small office home office) router then you should either use WEP or WPA for wireless security WPA-2 is recommended. This means you will have to know the key to attach to the wireless network. If someone else set it up then you will have to ask them for the key / passphrase.

Sounds like the NIC isn't the problem but the attaching to the wireless access point (WAP) is. Try www.xbox.com and search for some support regarding your situation. They have a good how to that details the installation / configuration step by step and it sounds like its one of those steps you're missing, unless I've misunderstood.

Good luck,

My son can't connect to x box live, it keeps asking for the wpa key, what is this and where do I get it from?

Your WPA key is simply put, the password that protects your internet. (Wi-Fi Protected Access). I'm assuming you have a wireless internet and that is how your son is connecting to Xbox Live? (Unless he is mistakenly connecting to another wireless network other than your own.)
Someone in your household should know what the WPA key is, because it was the password set to protect your internet. (Most likely done so on a PC or laptop.)
So here are my suggestions:
1. Make sure your son is connecting to the right wirless network on his Xbox. You can do this by going to Settings --> System Settings --> Network Settings --> Configure Network --> Clicking A once you get to that Menu, and then scanning for Networks. Chances are you will get a few results. In order to connect to Xbox Live, you have to chose your wireless network.
2. If no one in your household knows the WPA key, I would suggest contacting who ever set up your internet, or another option would be to connect to Xbox Live directly, using the modem cable. (You would have gotten this when you originally bought the Xbox.) This can get pretty complicated however, so I would suggest trying to figure out the WPA key.

I hope I was of some help, feel free to contact me if you're still confused.

My wireless has a WPA key and Abox is asking

  1. Plug in the Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter to one of the USB ports on the back of your Xbox 360.
  2. Turn on your Xbox 360 and navigate to "My Xbox" and then "System Settings."
  3. Go to "Network Settings" and then "Configure Network."
  4. Select the appropriate settings for the wireless network you will be connecting to on the "Basic Settings" tab.
  5. Enter the name of the SSID of the wireless network you will be connecting to. If the SSID is not broadcast, select "Specify Unlisted Network" and enter in the SSID of the network manually.
  6. Enter in the wireless security key (WEP or WPA) so that your Xbox 360 can access the network.
  7. Select "Test Xbox Live Connection" back on the "Network Settings" screen to verify that your Xbox 360 is now connected to the wireless network and ready for use.
Should work for either WEP or WPA

Cant connect xbox live to my wirless router

Typically that is located in the software of your router. Which means you need to open a web browser on a connected computer. Usually the URL to access the router's configuration page is: http://192.168.1.1
default username: admin
password by default: admin

in the configuration from there under wireless, and then wireless security, there would the location of the WPA key be.

What is a wpa key

Hi Robert,

the key you are referring to is like a password for the wireless network and need to be entered in order to get access. If this is your wireless network and you did not set the access key then its most likely still set to the default which is normally one of a string of numbers you will find on the bottom of your wireless router.
You can change the key if you like (to make it easier to remember) by going into the router settings, clicking on the wireless settings portion and changing or even deactivating (not recommended) the need for a password.
Getting to the sett tings menu of a router is different for each brand so any walkthroughs i give you to get to that point would most likely be wrong. That said here's an example for what i do with my personal router:

1- I type 192.168.0.1 in my internet explorer browser but yours will probably be different. check your manual or search for your manual online. they are always easy to find.
2- the router settings pops up
3- i click on network settings then wireless settings
4- i change the password to no less than ten numbers and letters
5- i save the changes then exit the settings
6- i go to my xbox and enter the password i just input
7- i frag everyone i see in Halo including the master chief. :)

I hope this helped, please dont forget to rate me.

Wireless internet access

Mandy,
The password is a WPA Shared Key. The secret key will be shown in your routers security or advanced or network configuration page.......if you forgot the key then the best alternative will be to reset the router
you could simply create a new WPA-PSK and then setup each machine again that needs wireless access to your network.

What is a WPA for an xbox 360 wireless networking adaptor

To connect your console to a wireless network Turn on your console and any wireless networking devices (such as a router or an access point).Attach the wireless networking adapter to the back of your console.Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard to enter your network settings. If all settings are correct, exit the System area. Your console should now be connected to your wireless network. Your WPA is your wireless security for your network. When you secured your network it asked you for your WPA key. Thats what you need to use. I hope you wrote it down somewhere. If not you'll have to log into your router and just change it to something new. If you do that make sure to right it down some where safe.
