Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I can't connect to the internet or to my local network on my Dell, it says "one or more adapters on your computer may not be working right" or something to that extent when I "diagnose and repair". I've tried this at home and at a friends so its my computer, not a network issue.

Try installing the latest LAN and wireless drivers.
You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, thesupport download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on thebottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Taglabel is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where thespecific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you selectthe Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on thislink to download the drivers: - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

To connect to the Internet, certain hardware and services are needed, which are listed below. Without any one of these items, connection to the Internet is not possible.
  • Broadband Internet Service (also known as Internet Service Providers or ISP) - Telephone companies (also known as DSL, which uses a telephone line) and cable TV companies usually offer Internet service.

  • Broadband Modem - Normally, a broadband modem can be rented or purchased from the ISP.

  • Computer with a Network Adapter - This is usually a device located inside the computer.

  • Broadband Router - A router is used to connect all of your computers to the network (but is not needed for a single computer). The router also provides a way to connect to the Internet through the Broadband Modem.

My newly purchased dell inspiron 560 will not connect to the network due to "an invalid ip address". 10 other computers are working fine on the network. Any solutions?

You will need to manually configure the IP for your Local Network Connection: right click on the notification icon, go to Properties, double click Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Or click properties, click Use the following IP address and input the correct data according with the settings in your network - change just the IP first.

I am using Dell Latitude E5500 at home, I am unable to connect to internet. But Wireless Network is connected and having good strength

Try to uninstall and reinstall your Local Area Network driver by going to the device manager from the control panel. expand the network adapter and right-click your LAN then select uninstall. Restart your computer and windows will automatically reinstall your LAN driver.

Unless you are purchasing an old desktop PC, I am pretty sure any system you purchase these days (whether it's from Dell or whatever) have atleast an integrated LAN Rj45 connection on the motherboard.

The cheapest computer on dell.com (the Inspiron) has an integrated LAN connection for example.

Hope this helps,

I need to connect to the internet

can you see if the network card has the correct drivers?
Click Start; Right Click on "My Computer" Select Manage

A new application will launch - Computer Management
From this application, click on "Device Manager"
There may be some devices with ? listed - make sure that there is at least a device under network adapter. If there isn't, then the driver is not set for the network adapter - you'll need to take the original pc system disk to get the driver; or download it from dell.

Hi Brucemph,

I just physically fixed a dell with the same problem. Dell installs a wireless configuration software that will auto configure the wireless adapter in the event there is a "Conflict". It basically disables the default card. Look at the programs you have installed and find the Dell Wireless program. Open it and select the default wireless card that is installed on the laptop. Once that is selected, go to your network connection, right click on the network adapter choose properties, select internet protocol, right mouse click, properties and make sure the box is checked that say's obtain ip address automatically.

Let me know how you do.
