Question about Western Digital 500GB ELEMENTS 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Open Question

Hi, My WD 500 has a power pack. The green light flicks and goes off, together with the blue light on Hard Drive,, but checked the power pack on its OWN and green light stays on. The moment I plug into the Hard drive it goes off. I have tried twiddling it gently into place on HD and it worked once. However I cannot get it into position again. Would it just be the connector problem and could I get the pliers and fiddle with it? I am in Zimbabwe and things difficult to find here? Many thanx, Caroline P.S. I am a photographer and have absolutely everything now installed on my hard drive... As I cannot access it, would one be able to remove the data and put it into another device?

SOURCE: WD Passport Drive Lights Up But Compu Does Not Find the Drive

No NO , WD is an excellent company as of 2004 , excellent products from them , if you wanna complain rag on seagate SATA drives hahaha they decided to dissable S.M.A.R.T. technology on their drives , yuck !

if the drive stopped working like that all the sudden , USE YOUR WARRENTY and RMA the drive back to the compay , get them to give you an RMA number , make up any sad story as long as the drive is still under warrenty , now they may ask you to pay for the new drive they send , but thats just untill they verify your old one is dead , then they'll refund the money back to your bank account.
which is totaly reasonable and protects them financialy , anybody would do the same.

You'te not alone , many many many DIFFERENT external drives are working one day and not working the next , it has alot to do with the batch , a particular batch of drives may be defective and nobody knows about it till it happens.... so please don't be real upset at maxtor or any others , but you can deffinately rag on seagate hahaha if just for their taking away the SMART drive diagnostics from their SATA drives .. we'll get you seagate Muhahaha we want our diagnostic tools because we're hardware monkies lol

so my advice is don't fight this too much , and RMA the drive back to the company if you still have warrenty power ...

they do have data recovery service , that may cost you more money , but you must decide what the data is worth to you , and maybe they will even get your data back for you if the drive was/is still under warrenty ,

always use your warrenty powers when you can.

SOURCE: Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

SOURCE: Flashing blue light on external WD hard drive & not recognised

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

SOURCE: My WD Elements 640GB Wont turn on.

I had the same problem. I fixed this by leaving the power supply connected with the wall socket for about 15 minutes, without connecting it to the external hdd. After that I connected the power supply with the external hdd and it worked perfectly. I hope this helps for you too!

SOURCE: AC Adapter blinks once, but no power getting to hard drive

These drives are known for lunching the power supply within the unit itself. Depending on you PC configuration, you may wish to do the same as I did when mine went. The drive itself is a standard 7200 sata drive. If your motherboard has sata capability, and/or a spare sata connection, you can slave the drive into your pc, and end of problem.

Hi, I have a WD external HD (my book essential) that doesnt seems to be read by any of the pcs I've tried to plug it on. It doesnt make a sound or even blinks that blues light. I tried to change...

This unit requires separate AC power. If the blue light is not on to begin with - indicating power, no PC will be able to read the USB. There is a hard disc in the unit that needs to spin...it is not solid state like a thumb drive.

Any place to purchase a power supply for a WD element??

If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.

If not they will sell you another one.

A replacement or extra power supply for your external drive can be purchased from our phone support team by calling 1-800-275-4932. Any technical support representative will be able to sell this part. Please have the serial number or model number of the hard drive ready, as this is needed to determine the correct adaptor type for the hard drive.

I hope this helps,

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.

500 gB doesn't respond to anything!

Leave it unplugged for a minute or so and see if it boots up.
Check the Power supply if it still works.
