If you are certain that it is not a simple problem like your screen brightness being turned down too low, then this is usually an indication of a hardware fault on one of the circuit boards inside your monitor.

I am assuming that the screen is dark and unlit while the power is on, rather than lit up but without a picture signal. Please confirm if that is the case.

In most cases (well over half the time) this symptom is caused by some bad capacitors on the power supply circuit board which results in the backlights not receiving adequate power to light up.

It could also be a bad surface mounted fuse on the inverter circuit board, but that is slighly less common.

Either way, the problem is interfering with the correct operation of the backlights in your LCD monitor resulting in the dark screen.

If you are handy with a screwdriver and a soldering iron, you may be able to disassemble the unit and check the various circuit boards for bad components. The main thing you would be looking for is any scorch marks or burned components. When electrolytic capacitors fail, they usually expand slightly and bulge out their normally flat tops or leak out brown gunk. There should be a bunch of these types of capacitors on the power supply board and you would want to give them a very close inspection for damage while you are in there.

However, I am completely unaware as to your ability or desire to carry out any kind of electronic troubleshooting yourself. There are some obvious electrical safety precautions to take into consideration, and even when the unit is unplugged, there are still some components inside like the large capacitors which can remain significantly dangerous.

I wil include a link to another expert's solution to a silmilar problem which includes links to his excellent LCD Troubleshooting Guides. You can read through those if you like, to give you some idea of the troubleshooting and repair process. Please give BUDMRTN a thumbs up rating on that page if you find his information helpful.

If you are unable or unwilling to carry out the necessary electronic troubleshooting or repair procedures yourself, then you will have to carefully weight the cost benefits of spending money getting the unit repaired at a shop.

Normally, you are looking at a minimum charge of about $50 - $60 US to have a technician open up your monitor for repairs. Given the fairly low cost these days for a brand new 17 inch monitor, I'm not sure any significant repair at a shop would be cost effective for you. Especially considering a brand new monitor will come complete with a warranty, while your repaired unit would still have most of the same old parts in it just waiting for their turn to give up the ghost.

Unless the solution involves just swapping out a few bad capacitors or something simple like that, then it is often not economically feasible to have smaller monitors like that sent out for repair.

Just a bit more information to consider Beverly.

    Good luck.

    Joe.

Sanyo DP46142 TV comes on for approximately 30 seconds and then screen goes black. Power LED stays on.

Sounds like a backlight problem to me. If you input a signal to the HDMI or Composite input and then it goes black have you tried taking a flashlight to the screen to see if the picture is still there but just dark? That would indicate a backlight issue. That model appears to be an LED edge lit backlight, so if the picture is still there after going black your going to have to trace out the backlight circuit and see whats going on. Usually with LED backlighting if it comes on at all then the LED's are good, its just the driver supply thats failing to keep them on. Some TV's have a small separate board that provides the backlight control, but i suspect with this model its on the power supply board and not the motherboard. Have you checked that board? It could be bad caps on the power supply board, check the voltages to the backlighting when it lights up and then when it goes dark. It could just be some failed capacitors on the power supply causing that voltage rail to drop off.

On Planar PL1700 monitor, screen stays black after power failure

this is a common problem with the capacitor, try opening your monitor and see if there is a capacitor swalow like gonna blow... the capacitor has a form like a AA battery... if changing the capacitor the problem persist maybe is a problem with the board and you need to search if the board have continous power....

The monitor has no picture at all and the light goes from green to yellow

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

I have a mw monitor ,it comes on for about a miniute then goes black i can hear sound . the picture is dull switch off then on same problem. can it be the backlight?

Hello,

The picture board of your monitor has developed fault. That is why the screen goes black.

The best thing for you to do is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity, because the fault is not something you can fix on your own in other not to complicate issues.

The repairer will help replace the faulty picture board and your monitor is back and better.

Take care.

Planar 997-2419-00 monitor is dark completely but you can still see the picture in the back. tell me what i need to buy from you.

ivettecorral, "Switch-mode-power-supply" is in partial shutdown mode. The monitor needs you or tech to fix it. Your display isn't any different than any other brand that has BLACK and not BLANK screen!!! Read more options that you have open to you in my fixya profile. Then decide what and how you will restore unit to operational condition. 12fixlouie aka louie12fix If this helps geting you started after you do some reading, come back and rate this response on fixya!!

Planar PE191M monitor display will not stay on

iv come across this before sometimes people can see that the monitor is actually working but the light has gone out id say bad capacitors that are breaking down. if you want to DIY it take it apart and find the light pcb usually built on the power supply pcb and look for bulging or swolen capacitors this happens alot in my opinion. if you can DIY it get the same caps or same value but better ones. I might be wrong but worth a look

The monitor get on for a second, then it goes black

sounds like a blown backlight (the TFT screen is lit from behind by thin white flourescenet type tubes,

if these become faulty then you cannot see the display output as it is no longer lit from behind
