Hello, Welcome to FixYa. To answer your question in a word, No there is no sulfer dioxide in any modern refrigerators that I know of. They pretty much all use a refrigerant called R134a which has been the standard for 15yrs. or so...depending in what country you reside of course, this applies to North America. You may want to contact Whirlpool (manufacturer of Kitchen Aid appliances) for more info if outside of North America. Hope that answers your question. Thank you for choosing FixYa today. Please take moment to rate the info provided. Regards, Macmarkus :)

Oh No. Sulphur dioxide was phased out in the '50's. It probably contains R134a refrigerant

I have a 1934 Crosley refrigerator and wanted to convert the sulfur dioxide compressor to R22 freon can this be done?

My guess is that, with great modification, this can be done. It may not even be legal to purposely release this gas, so you should check before getting in a bind with the locals..... SO2 is a deadly gas---DEADLY. Not only that, but figure that every component was engineered and sized to work with that system. If all you did was to change out the compressor and refrigerant it might work, but probably not effeciently, and probably not for long. The ineffeciency will be from mis-matched components, and the not for long part is due to the probability that some of the materials designed to work in your old system will probably be incompatible with the new system, and will fail over a brief period of time. Other factors will include compressor output pressures, tube wall thickness and diameter, orifice sizes, as well as general age of the existing components. This will not be an easy undertaking. Your best bet if you want to preserve your icebox and bring it into the present, is to completely remove all of the components (did I mention that SO2 can KILL you?), and replace them with an entire system. Basically, you'll need to gut a refrigerator and build it into your Crosley. I truly respect what you want to do. I once had a "Coolerator Flavor Saver", and it was better than anythimg I have bought since. Not to mention the cool handle and all that chrome. Just remember that this ain't no simple swap out; it's a major rebuild. Consult with some local old-time ice men in your area, and get their advice. Chances are that they may help you just to see a fridge like yours. One last caution....IF you go to cutting lines, do it outside, away from loved ones and valued pets. At the first hint of gas escaping, leave the area until all of the gas has dissapated. If more cuts are necessary, do this each time. Several fans to keep you up wind wouldn't hurt, and a fully enclosed self contained breathing apparatus would be safer still. Whatever you decide, I urge you to get professional local help to guide you.
Best regards, and WORK SAFELY! --W/D--

Right side stopped working (KPTT809)

I had the same problem with my Kitchenaid toaster which is 4 years old. I called Kitchenaid and they said that this model now has a 5 year warranty and they have replaced the toaster for a new one. What a fantastic company. Try giving them a call.
