I was driving my 1996 monte carlo and the red oil light came on. it sputterd for a min then stalled and wont stay runnin for more then 2 to 3 sec, do you think its the oil pump?

Is the security light flashing? Did the light respond to your 3/10 attempts. Make sure the battery is fully charged then just try to start. Many times while changing the switch the door stays open add to that your attempts to start and the battery will have enough current to run the starter but nothing left for ignition and fuel injectors. what size engine? any repairs lately to the engine? when does it stall? freeway speeds, around town or at lights?

Very common Transmission code - solution # 1 check to be sure Fluid is full . If not trans code sent plus will turn on check engine light or service engine soon . # 2 be sure condition of fluid is Good / Not worn out . Fluid must be Red / Reddish in color Cold and When hot- warm still have red / even lighter than when cold .# 3 if a higher than 50,000 mile car used in heavy rush hour traffic during hot weather then change fluid to give it fresh oil / Trans will fight heat better and save you a $$ 2000 repair bill . # 4 most important of all you can save a Trans by adding Lucas Trans treatment it is $ 20 some places but well worth $$ to extend life of vehicle if one in need of saving $$ .This can even be added to existing fluid if color is still reddish .

if this happened after the new battery the security system may need reprogram. turn the key to on and leave it on untill the security light turns off then turn the key off wait 5 sec turn the can on it should be ok.

sounds like the fuel filter is clogged around 30 dollar fix maybe less

In this case it is usually the low oil level sensor that is defective; however it could be an issue in that electrical circuit as well from the scenario you have given.

Replace your fuel filter.

I had this same problem on my 2005 monte carlo, took mechanic a while to figure out it was the idle air control valve. They also replace the idle air control motor.

is the battery good if it is shorted out it will do this or if the charging system is not working
