This is a common problem. The valves need adjusting in the motor. You may eventually get it started and running in this condition but you will probably end up breaking your pull rope a few times in the process. Take it to someone who works on small engines like a mower repair shop.

PULL ROPE INSTALLATION ON ROTARY LAWNMOWERS,,B&S,TECUMSEH ,HONDA ENGINES

Hello sir,This usually happens at the most inopportune time. You go out mow the lawn, pull the rope and it comes out in your hand. Here's how to fix it yourself.
First, we'll talk about a simple rope replacement. In most cases you will have to remove the blower housing from the engine, remove any plastic outer cover, empty and remove fuel tank lay on the deck, tecumseh engines remove the screw on the oil filler cap, remove the four bolts holding housing on. to get to the underside of the rewind starter where the rope is. We'll assume at this point that the spring is ok and you can just wind it back up again.or you will need a new rope, you can get new rope at most home improvement centers that sell mowers, comes with handle, You can check the spring by turning on the hub in a counter-clockwise direction and see if the spring gains tension. Do not try to remove the spring from its holder or you may end up having to take the mower in for service.
1. Remove the rope from around the hub. Since there is no tension, it should come right out. If you are lucky and it broke near one end, you can probably just re-use it. If it is badly frayed or too short, you will need to find a replacement at a local hardware store.
2. Attach the handle or tie a knot in one end of the rope so it will not wind all the way into the hub. You also may want to burn the rope ends to keep them from fraying and causing a problem in the future. Set the rope aside where you can grab it once you wind up the spring.
3. Wind the hub in a counter-clockwise direction using your thumb to keep it from unwinding, until the spring is tight. Then let it come back slightly so the rope hole in the starter housing lines up with the rope hole in the hub.
4. Stick the rope through both holes while holding the hub from unwinding. This is tricky because you don't want the hub to unwind on you before you have the rope secured in it. A pair of needle nose pliers or a small screwdriver or pick may help get the rope through.
5. Tie a half hitch knot in the rope after you have it through both holes. While holding the rope, release your hold on the hub and let the rope slowly pull itself back into the starter.
6. Put the blower housing back on and your ready to start the engine & mow. hope this helps, don't forget the 4 thumbs up,any comment welcome, thank you. Hello sir, Pull rope installation, place mower on a good work surface, empty the fuel, remove the fuel tank, lay tank on mower deck, remove any plastic outer cover, now remove engine metal cover housing, there should be four bolts or screws in housing, remove old rope, get new rope from your local repair shop you will need 5 ft of # 5 rope,ok remove pull handle from old rope, burn both ends of new rope to prevent fraying, lets install new rope, place housing in your left hand holding against your body turn pulley right to left until stops, back off until holes line up,you might want to put a screwdriver through the cover grates to keep pulley from turning, tie a knot in one end of rope, put other end through holes from the inside out through pulley, pull until tight, now let rope wind up slowly until stops mark where rope stops, pull rope out about half way clamp rope or tie so rope don't go back in,cut rope at mark put handle on untie rope let rope retract.you should be good to go,hope this helps,DON'T FORGET THE 4 THUMBS UP,,any comments welcome.thank you.

How do I preload my Pull rope

Most recoil assemblies are easy to fix...but not in an obvious way. Remove the recoil asembly from the small engine housing/flywheel cover. Usually three bolts hold it on. 10mm on Honda's. Pull the remaining rope thru the exit hole if possible. Otherwise, fish remaining rope thru the hole by turning rope winding pulley as if pulling handle was still attached, lining up any remaining rope end and pushing thru the exit hole in outer recoil housing or backing it out the inside pulley. Continue to wind rope winding pulley in a counterclockwise ( facing pulley...not outer metal) untill it will not tighten any further. Remove any more old rope. Line up pulley hole and exit hole. Melt end of new rope into a tapered shape..if not supplied that way. the pulley can be held in place by inserting a screwdriver thru the both the pulley and the metal housing spokes. Thread the new rope thru the exit and pulley hole. Tie the rope end sticking thru and draw tight. Cut 6 feet of rope...if not using a presized pull. Release screwdriver from spokes and rope should draw up onto the pulley. Tie off opposite end of the rope to keep from losing that end into the exit hole. put the handle on the rope and tie a knot in the end to retain the handle. Untie the tie-off and allow the handle to fully retract. If handle does not fully retract you may shorten the rope so that it does...as long as you have plenty of pull lenght.

Installed improperly or the rope is not the proper size.

Troy built mower honda 160 engine oil leak around governer shaft. no oil seal but shows one on parts breakdown. Can not find part number for shown seal.

Drain oil from mower until proper level. Remove spark plug and pull starter rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray starter fluid in cylinder pull rope several times to clean out. Replace fouled plug with new spark plug. Remove air cleaner, ensure no oil present, replace filter as needed. Clean air filter box with carb cleaner. Install new air filter reattach filter cover. Prime engine, pull starter rope 1/2 way 4 times to help prime, then pull starter rope fully up to 10 times to start.

HAVE 6+ year old Honda HRT216S3DA which spits gas when rope pulled...I realize engine is toast...but Replaced drive tranny and all last spring over $150 in repairs...IS IR WORTH PLACING NEW ENGINE?

Spitting gas when the rope is pulled does not necessarily mean the engine is toast. Could simply be out of time, especially if the engine spins OK when the rope is pulled.

The starter pull cord has pulled off.

EASY,REMOVE TOP COVER OF ENGINE THAT HOUSES ROPE ASSY. LOOK UNDERNEATH PLASTIC PIECE,CUT THE KNOT OFF THAT COMES THROUGH HOLE AND PULL AND EXISTANT ROPE OUT. OK, GET NEW ROPE AND HANDLE TOGETHER,THE END THAT IS OPPOSITE FROM NEW PULL STRING HANDLE YOU ARE GOING TO USE. CAREFULLY WIND UP ROPE HOUSING NICE AND FIRM JUST BY WINDING IT UP WITH HAND IN AS IT SITS IN TOP COVER. WHEN YOU THINK IT HAS ENOUGH TO PULL ROPE IN FEED END OF ROPE IN HOLE AND IN CHANNEL OF ROPE HOUSING,THERE IS A SMALL HOLE TO LINE IT UP WITH,WHEN SEE THE ROPE END FEED IT THROUGH THAT HOLE NOW. MAKE TAKE ANOTHER SET OF HANDS OR A WEDGE TO STOP RETRACTING OF SPRING. PULL ROPE THROUGH AND TIE A DOUBLE KNOT AT END SO IT WONT PULL THROUGH. SLOWLY LET IT PULL ROPE IN,THEN PULL ROPE BY HANDLE FULL LENGTH TO ENSURE ALL KINKS ARE OUT AND IT PULLS BACK IN LIKE IT SHOULD.

Pull cord broke

if you have not replaced cord you will need to do this, when you fit the cord turn the pulley 4 or 5 times full circle the same way as if it was pulling cord, then feed cord through pulley and out of housing to fit handle when this is done you can let pulley recoil and you should have correct tension, hope this helps
