Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Garage Door opens by itself

I am having a problem with the craftsman garage door opening by itself, without pressing the wired, or the remote opener. I can close it without a problem, and it will stay down, but later when I go out to the garage, the door is open again. I tried to change the code on the opener itself, thinking a nieghbor may have got in on my code, but I don't think this model has one that is changeable. I purchased a universal remote because we broke the old one, and while I was at it I adjusted the tension on the downward motion of the door because it wasn't coming back up if something got in the way. I since adjusted the tension back, thinking that may have been the problem for the door opening by itself,... but it is still doing it. If you may have a solution for this problem, I could use some expertise on the matter.
Thank you,

We were having trouble with our keypad not opening the garage door. My husband reprogrammed it and it, as well as our remotes are working fine now. However, since then, the garage door will open when no one here is pressing any buttons. I don't know if someone close to us is on the same frequency now (we haven't had problems before) or what is happening. Can we somehow reprogram the opener to a different frequency or what should we do?

I have a Sears garage opener and I also replaced the keypad outside the garage door. I tried resetting the code, changed the code but with no success.

My daughter and I purchased Sears garage door openers about 4 years ago. We bought different Craftsman models. She lives 5 miles from my house. We both have been experiencing phantom garage door openings. I was working in my garage last week and the door just opened on its own. I walked outside and there was no one around. We are now afriad to leave the door engaged overnight or when we are out of town. I have reprogrammed the remotes as well as the dorr opener to no avail. Please Help!

Your garage door springs may be out of balance. Try this test: Remove power from the opener motor. Pull the red release rope so that the door is detached from the openers drive. Lift open the door by hand- it should open all the way freely. Next, pull the door back down, stopping it about chest-high. It should remain where you stopped it. IIf the door is difficult to move, or does not stay half open, the springs need replacement or adjustment.

Sometimes the door opens randomly by itself. I haven't pressed any remote to make this happen. How can I prevent this from occurring?

This usually happens with either a bad wall control or the wiring to the control. Staples used to hold the wires sometimes cuts through the insulation and causes the door to open.

My Craftsman remote won't close my garage door

If the remote opens and closes while inside the garage but not outside , there are a few things it could be. Assuming it was working fine before..
1. weak battery in remote.
2. remote itself could be bad. (unless you have more than 1 remote acting the same)
3. Logic board in opener is going bad causing limited range. Is the wire that hangs down from the opener straightened out? That is your remote antenna. Some people have coiled or even cut it off..reducing range.
4. Less likely but this can happen- interference from another electronic device, wireless routers, cell phone, new appliances etc.. can reduce remote range. Any new electronics recently purchased?

I have liftmasterPro garage door opener. How do i

You cannot change the code of the opener without purchasing new remotes and not using your existing remotes. To change the code of the keypad locate the smart/learn button just to the left of all those white wires. Press and immediately release this and then walk over and key in any 4 digit number and press enter.

Our craftsman garage door opener's wireless keypad is broken

It sounds like the default no code is still there.

Reset the unitat the opener itself and reload your code from the remote.

Garage door opened by neighbor

Have you seen the neighbor open your door? The reason I ask is because it is almost impossible. The most common cause of a door opening by itself is a bad wall control or the wiring leading to it. You can temporarily eliminate both possibilities by removing the wire from terminal 1 at the rear of the motor unit. Do this and ask your neighbor to bring over his remote and try it on your opener.

Need to change the freqency on a lift master garage door

Chance are they set there remote when you were using yours. To reset your opener you need to clear all the codes on the back of your opener itself there is a square button purple or red depends on how old it is. Press and hold that button until the LCD light turns off. Press your remote to make sure it has stopped working. Then press the button again only for a sec until the light comes on and starts to flash then press your remote button. Repeat for each remote.
