Question about True GDM-23 Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a True refrigerator model # GDM-23. It keeps freezing the drinks inside. I have replaced the thermostat, but it's still freezing. The coils are clean and the fan is running.

The compressor will not shut down even when the thermostat is turned up (higher temperature) all the way.

You will need to find out why the unit is not shutting down properly....
It may be that the thermostat sensor will need to be placed in a different spot...or the temperature may just need to be raised higher...
Does the thermostat turn off the unit if the temperature is raised??? If so, then place a thermometer in the cooler and then adjust the thermostat to 38F by that thermometer and not by the t-stat calibration, it may be off even if it is new...

If the t-stat is not cycling the unit then you will need to use an electrical meter to trace out the power to the unit and find out why it is not shutting down...

Okay... thought your problem is not thermostat related...
There is a contactor or relay that the thermostat goes to that is welded shut and giving the unit power all of the time....
Can't say for sure on that unit, but I think there is a contactor that turns on the compressor....that is where your problem is...the contactor is in the box where the power hooks up to the compressor unit...that can be replaced with a generic contactor, as long as the amp rating and the coil voltages are matched up with the old one...

I have a TRUE model # GDM-26 s/n 1-3521660 it keeps freezing our drinks inside, we have the temp turned down all the way to 1 and still freezes what could it be? Thought it might be the thermostat!! ...

I would say it has to be a bad thermostat. Generally I set these on 5 and they work fine. If it were a refrigerant problem the coil might freeze up but the drinks would not. Changing them can be a DIY project if you can get the thermostat.

Not fun the first time. Unplug the unit. There will be a plate with two screws that the thermostat is mounted to either on the right side or right front of the coil cover. Remove the two screws and pull the plate and thermostat down in one piece. Unplug the two wires from the stat and remove the plate from the stat making sure to note which way the plate and thermostat are oriented. The thin capillary from the stat runs up to the back of the coil. You have to reach your hand into the opening created by removing the plate and feel your way to the capillary entrance at the coil. You may be able to just see it through the hole. Make a good mental note of its position in there and pull the old capillary out. Measure how deep the capillary was in there and try to get that far in with the new one. I generally put a little piece of tape on the new capillary about where I want it to stop at the coil. You just want to make sure the capillary is clear of any wires and doesn't rub against anything in its routing. Reinstall is reverse of uninstall.

Have a true ttp67 that freezes when turned on after 2-3 hours instead of cooling!

If it was off over night the fan comes on you should feel air coming from the inside vent the condensor fan may be bad or the blade is loose
If you feel air then it freezes it's a Classic example of low freon gas.

We have a GDM-26 commerical coke machine. Only

If any of your drinks are freezing you need to adjust your temp setting. The suggested setting is 5. changing the temp setting basically tells the refrigerator to stop cooling when the temp hits a low degree, and to start cooling when it hits a high degree. This keeps your drinks not to hot, not too cold, but just right. If this doesn't work I would change the cold control altogether, it might've went bad. If you have a few minutes, locate the condensor fan (bottom) and make sure it is periodically turning on and off like it should.

turn thermostat all the way to the left to turn it off. restore power and see if it stays on and inside fan is running. Then turn thermostat to rite to turn on compressor. If the power trips when turning thermostat back on, the compressor may be bad. :(
