Question about LG DP885 Portable DVD Player

2 Answers

I have an LG DP885 portable DVD player that doesn't seem to like to play DVDs that have trailers on them. For example, if I put in a simple kids movie like Tom & Jerry The Fast & The Furry, it plays every time with no problem. But if I put in Toy Story (not a fancy new version, just a 7-year-old copy of Toy Story that's in excellent condition), sometimes it will play, and sometimes it won't. It also won't play most TV shows, like Glee or White Collar unless it's in the mood.

Thank you! I will get a laser lens cleaner to see if it helps!

By the way, we've had the player for about 4 years, but wasn't used regularly until about six months ago. Even so, it is not used all day or every day. Thanks again! I'll let you know if I get it working properly.

OK, "not a fancy new version, just a 7-year-old copy" (sic) well see, that's most likely your problem the AGE of the DVD;s, it's all to do with type of encryption and format types, also often the type of medium, older mediums can be very difficult for the modern day laser assemblies to cope with (read Play, that's why it seems to have a mind of it's own) these older dye sublimates used on the older type DVD's. Often the converse is true on Older DVD players, they have difficulty often with the new DVD's...
OK well there is not much one can do other than obtain modern day copies of the DVD titles, or obtain a DVD Player that "Copes" with the "Older" types.
Things you can do, well running a lens cleaner through the DVD can't hurt, apart from that.. not a lot.
I have heard that using a DVD Resurfacer/Cleaner, a device that, spins and polishes & rehabilitates a scratched DVD's, i believe it can work wonders?

Hello,

how long have you been using this player? I suspect the laser (lens) of the player. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on DVD discs.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Take care.

Okay! 4 years is really a long year. Even if you don't use it regularly, dust can dirty the lens..........

It depends how you burn movies (for example). If you burned as data disc, it's probably won't play it. Make sure you burn movies as DVD format.

My portable DVD player will not play the movie.

Sounds like either a dirty or bad optical pickup in the unit--if dirty it can be cleaned but if bad may cost too much to repair.

I need a power supply for DC 9 volt input in an LG DP885 and also access to a users manual for the same device.

To solve your first problem of needing a power supply for an LG DP885... just goto ebay and buy one or even google for purchase... Fixya is not a sales sight and does not offer items for sale or trade.

Second part was real simple... just googled LG DP885 and it popped up with a site where you can download the manual: http://www.retrevo.com/support/LG-DP885-Portable-DVD-Players-manual/id/21308dj699/t/2/

LG DP450 portable dvd player will not play dvds. No disk appears on the screen & these are new original disks which work in other devices.

This solution worked for me! My portable player would no longer turn the dvd, "no disc error". I bought a disc cleaner at a local office supply and manually turned it with my hand about 10 times. It works now!!

My DP885 will not turn on. Plugged in nothing happens.

And probably had a 90 day warranty?
The problem is surely with the power supply for the unit if it is completely dead.
If you still have the car adaptor at hand, try running it in a car. If it works there, then the major part of the set is OK and the problem limited to the power supply. Since the main supply is internal, there isn't a whole lot you can do on your own.
In many other systems (LCD TVs, for example) the supply is a separate board but it isn't likely to be this way in your player so the supply is probably part of the main board which is probably too expensive to replace or even repair.
If you decide to replace it with new, punch in the brand & model number here at FixYa to see if that unit also may suffer an early death.

The problem has been fixed, there is a button on side of player and it was moved to usb port and could not play dvds, so moved to other side to play dvds and it went.

Disc Error when I try to play a dvd LG DP781

Hi,

Sounds like either a dirty or weak laser/lens. Pls try cleaning with a CD disc cleaner or manually using cotton buds (if the eye is accessible).

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Recently purchased a unit... You can imagine the joy when I found in Manual: Audio discs can only play if in .mpg or .wma formats! Yes, all the bells and whistles except the most basic of functions such as all common audio formats. Other portable $99 dvd player works with them.
