Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

It could be a number of things so the problem will need to be narrowed down. The place I would start is as follows, making sure the compressor itself is coming on/operating.

The noise you alluded to, "it makes a noise like it wants to turn on, but its not cooling" is it like a "clicking" noise following a low "humming" or "buzz" when the compressor is perhaps trying to start ?

If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ve provided the following info to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician...it's your call.

I don`t know the age of your fridge, but I should mention...

** Most of the manufacturers of fridges ( including Kenmore/Sears ) have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to.**

If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor.

On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

the refrigerator is not cooling. it is plugged in - 2234770.jpg

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

ffd3e9e.jpg
With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding=not good !

If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1the refrigerator is not cooling. it is plugged in - 775ec2d.jpgt.

i.e.

775ec2d.jpg

The above package contains info and hardware on how to connect it.

NOTE : the HS410 ( 3 in 1 ) should be considered just a temporary "fix" as opposed to an actual "repair" in should not be relied on for long term reliability or safety, but rather thefactory replacemnet, double check with your model number.

Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the guidance and a testimony to your inquiry you received here at FixYa, either or all is appreciated.

Let me know if the compressor is indeed operating yet the fridge or freezer fail to cool and I'll continue to help in any manner I can. Good luck

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Same problem for me. Lost power in the St Louis storm friday. Power came back on and now click/buzz no compressor and it keeps trying every few minutes. I turned off then unplugged for about ten minutes to let the pressure equalize but no change. I will try with meter like suggested tomorrow. Kenmore 2001 bottom freezer.

Fridge light doesn't work/makes ticking noise

Let the refrigerator cool for awhile without opening the door. 39 minutes should do. Then check to see if the bulb is warm or hot. If it is the door switch is bad and the light is staying on which will make the plastic expand and cracklel or tick. Hope this helps.

Refrigerator not cool

If the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is warm, it is probably a defrost problem, see>>> Refrigerator Defrost Parts .

If the freezer and the refrigerator compartment are warm after the unit has been plugged in for at least an hour, it may be a different problem. Does the refrigerator sound like it is running? If not, have you checked the fuse/breaker box in your house?

Check to make sure the refrigerator plugged in, and the cord isn't damaged, the lights are on inside the refrigerator, the temperature dial is at the proper level, there is a normal "running" noise coming from the back of the refrigerator (no rattling or burning odors), and it isn't giving off a strong and unpleasant smell (coolant leak). Check here for help diagnosing possible problems >> Refrigerator Parts Cooling .

Ac dose not really work very well and when i turn the wheel ths jeep make noises

When you turn the steering wheel and it makes a whirring noise, check the power steering fluid level. As for the aircon, make sure the setting is on cool, a/c light is on, on switch and that airflow is good. If it is still not cool after running for a couple of minutes, have refrigerant checked.

Ice build-up around the fan making a noise.

Drain line froze.
Used hair dryer to thaw frozen line, works OK now. 01/07/09
Think the frozen drain line was caused by the light in the refrigerator not shutting off when the door closes, causing excess cooling in the freezer. Poor design on the light shutoff switch, corrected design to make permanent repair

Side by side not working

Make sure the compressor is running and not just a fan motor.

Unplug the ref for 30 min or so and while you are behind the ref plug it back in, listen for the compressor to start. If you hear a clicking noise and the compressor never starts then replace the relay on the compressor. If the compressor runs and still does not cool then you may have a coolant problem.
