Question about Sanyo DRW-1000 DVD Recorder/VCR

1 Answer

Sanyo drw 1000 dvd/vcr recorder Have used this machine on n off for years. I use Verbatim DVD-R disks and have had no problems until recently. Recently, when a timed recording ends regardless of the length of recording and the unit set to 'LP' for recording when I turn it back on it tells me there are '00:00' time or space available on the disk and therefore will not allow me to record additional programming. It does this regardless of the length of the recently recorded program i.e. 30 mins, 90 mins etc. There should be a total of 4 hours available and I have recorded multiple programs on the same brand disk in the past. I have already tried to unplug the unit and allow it to set and I have already attempted resetting it back to 'factory settings' I have read and re-read the manual looking for any other 'setting' that may effect the number of times you can record to a DVD-R disc but no luck

no the disc(s) are not finalized and still require that step after I turn the burner back on ... i.e. I will load a 4.7 GB disc set the record time at LP which is the longest play and that gives me an inital max time of 4 hours ... set the record time and regardless of duration when I come back later and turn the unit on to schedule another program I am told there is no space remaining on the disc and in the setup menu the disc is still (un) finalized. The manual specifically says that DVD-R discs can be recorded to as long as space is remaining and I have recorded multiple programs to the same brand discs before ... also I had several Maxell DVD-R discs sitting around and recorded to one of them with exactly the same problem.

yes and when using DVD-R discs the player automatically initializes to 'Video Mode' and will not allow you to select 'VR mode' for the discs (only available for RW discs) but just in case I have gone into setup and made sure that the VR mode was set to LP as well and it made no difference

ok I will have to dig up a DVD-RW ... as for using the DVD-R discs there is NO 'unfinalize' option to choose and there is also no 'finalize' option available anywhere that allows you to select it for auto-finalize the only finalize menu option is in the setup menu under dics and you have to manually access this 'after' a recording has been made

I have a feeling that you have choosen the setting to finalize the disk and that is why you are not able to burn anything into the remaining blank space. I suggest you cross-check that the particular option has not selected so that you can record multiple sessions on the same disc.

Ok. Are you sure you are the recording mode is "Video mode" and not "VR" mode? I have seen the VR mode cause problems on certain recorders so please cross-check its in the Video mode and let me know

Ok. Those are the only 2 settings affecting this. So lets verify if you are able to record multiple sessions on a DVD-RW. If you are not able to do so choose the un-finalize option and see if you can record again. This will help us figure out if its finalizing the disc even though you have chosen not to!

Yes the un-finalize option is not available for DVD-Rs. That is why I suggested that you use a DVD-RW.
