Question about IBM ThinkPad T43 Notebook

1 Answer

IBM T43. Type 2669. ATI graphics Works perfectly on external monitor. At startup the laptop screen shows hundreds of multicoloured vertical lines which are evenly distributed across the screen. After a few minutes the pattern changes to a predominant blue green screen with a few dark vertical lines each a few millimetres across. By toggling the laptop screen off and back on, without rebooting, the hundreds of multicoloured lines reappear and the cycle repeats

Not what I wanted to hear but seems logical.
I was hoping that it might be an inverter board but the fact that the screen is bright probably precludes that. Thanks again

I am confused now. Could it be the cable rather than the screen? Any further experiences?

The laptop although old has had minimal use. It looks like new and the lid has not been opened or closed many times. Therefore the video cable has not been flexed many times. Could it still fail or does that strongly suggest a screen failure.

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you have multicolored vertical lines on the screen when you're using the computer and it works with an external display or monitor it just only means that the LCD of you laptop is BAD. The system graphic card is working fine since you can still use an external monitor but the problem is you need to replace the LCD screen of the system.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

Basically we cant say as of the moment the main problem of the lcd it can be the connector from the lcd to the board or the LCD itself. We receive lots of same problem that you have that the problem is they can use the monitor on an external but not the main LCD and the problem that causing it is a BAD lcd. You can bring it to HP repair center or local tech to fix it but make sure to backup your files

Im just explaining the possible cause of the problem that we have but if the cable of the lcd is the problem the lcd should still be replaced. If you still have warranty of the computer it would be better so that hp can cover the repair. if not they you need to pay for the repair

But im sure sir that the problem here is the lcd. Because if you can still use it on your external monitor. If some cases that there's no display on both internal and external the problem is the motherboard.

Hi:
I believe that your LCD panel is the problem, but you should verify that you have good video, by toggling to an external monitor to check your output. If it dispays good, you have an LCD problem.

Laptop screen displays vertical lines of various colours

Have you tried to connect your laptop to external monitor?
If you get normal picture on external monitor, then you need to replace LCD screen, but if you get same picture on external screen, then unfortunately you will need new motherboard, because graphics card is integrated to motherboard.

Vertical lines on thinkpad T43p screen.

You have identified the fault is the video card, I am in agreement. The fault is on the motherboard and a replacement motherboard is the only fix. This may not be a cost effective solution, I would recommend you put your money towards a new laptop.

Dell Inspiron 8200 ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Green Screen Problem

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop. After your computer is attached to an external monitor, press the <Fn> key and the <F8> (CRT, LCD) key to switch the video image to the display. If the external monitor works, the computer display or video controller may be defective.

Screen problem

if the display on the external monitor is fine in that case it is an issue with the LCD as you get a video output on external monitor
you have to get the LCD either repaired or replaced.
