Most deskjets include a maintenance section. Open this printer in PRINTERS on Control Panel (assuming Windows). right click on the printer and select properties. You will have to look for the maintenance section. There you should find an option to "clean heads". You may need to do this several times if never done before. After each cleaning, print a test pattern. Hope this helps.

Step 1.How to clean the cartridge:

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer.
  2. Click Start .
  3. Click Settings .
  4. Click Printers and Faxes .
  5. Right-click on the name of your printer and then select Printing Preferences .
  6. Click the Services tab and then click Service this Device .
  7. The printer Toolbox displays. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridge(s) .
  8. Click Clean , and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Step 2.
  1. Load plain white, U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the tray.
  2. Follow one of these steps to open the product Toolbox :
    • Windows XP: Click Start , click Run , type control printers in the Open: text box, and then press the Enter key.
    • Windows Vista: On the task bar, click the Windows icon (HP6988 printer skips lines and - c01319360.gif ), type printers in the Open: text box, and then press the Enter key.
    The Printers window opens.
  3. Right-click the icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences . The product Toolbox opens.
  4. Click the Services tab and then click Service this Device .
  5. Click Align the Print Cartridges .
  6. Click Align , and then follow the on-screen instructions to align the cartridges.

Missing lines and streaks occur when the cartridge nozzles dry out, or when a cartridge is running low on ink.
  • Do not remove the protective tape from a new print cartridge until just before you install it. Once you remove the tape, do not reapply it.
  • After you have removed the protective tape, do not allow anything to touch the nozzles.
  • Print at least once a month to keep the print cartridges in good working order.
  • When you turn the printer off, always do so by pressing the button on the printer control panel, rather than by unplugging the printer. Turning the printer off properly allows it to protect the cartridges.
  • If you are removing a cartridge from the printer temporarily (for instance, removing the black cartridge in order to install the photo cartridge), put it in a cartridge protector.
  • If you do not have a cartridge protector and need to remove a cartridge temporarily, put it in an airtight plastic tub. Make sure nothing touches the nozzles. Do not use a plastic bag.
  • If you intend to store print cartridges in a tub for a long period of time, place color cartridges with the nozzles down, and black cartridges with the nozzles up.

Lexmark x1270 wont print color even though the cartridge is full.

A technique to improve print quality is to try and clean the cartridge nozzles. You may clean the cartridge by following the steps given below:

1. Go to the "Lexmark solution center." This can be done by clicking on "Start," go to "Programs" and Lexmark printer group. Click on the "Lexmark Solution center." Next click on the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Clean and Fix Horizontal streaks." Click on "Print". This will produce a printed page.

The colors that you should see here are black, yellow, magenta (a reddish purple) and cyan (a dark sky blue). You should notice the diagonal lines above and below the solid horizontal lines. These diagonal lines should be solid from left to right with no gaps.

If there are gaps in the lines or the print diminishes across the page, you should run the "Clean Print Nozzle" page a couple more times to try and clear it up. If you still have gaps at the top and bottom, you should "wick" the cartridges by following the steps given below:

1. Please open the "Solution center" again and go to the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Install color/black cartridge" and remove the cartridge or cartridges from the printer.
3. Get a damp paper towel.
4. Set the ink cartridge right side up on the damp paper towel so that the ink nozzles are against the towel and hold the cartridge in this position for about 15 seconds.
5. Now wipe the print head (on the bottom where the ink comes out) across in one direction only (left to right) until it looks clean.
6. Next dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure that the ink is flowing.
7. Snap the cartridges back into the printer.
8. On your computer, select "Old Cartridge install."
9. Repeat the "Clean Nozzle Page" one more time. If this fails to address the problem the entire procedure may need repeating.

Next, try this printer self-test by following the steps given below:
1. Power the printer off.
2. Press and hold the "Paper Feed" button.
3. While still holding the "Paper Feed" button, press and release the "Power" button. Continue holding the "Paper Feed" button.
4. When the printer starts pulling paper, release the "Paper Feed" button. It should print a test page at this point.
5. Power the printer off, as this test is continuous.

The self-test should at least print out a set of either a solid black or solid color bars, if not both (if you have a printer with both color and black installed simultaneously). Should this test fail, please try it again without cartridges installed. If the self-test still fails to take paper in and make sounds like the carrier is moving across the paper, this is a hardware issue, and the printer will require service. If the self-test completes without any cartridges installed, run the self-test again with only a color cartridge installed (If you have both black and color cartridges, after this test, run the test again with just the black cartridge installed). If you find that either cartridge causes the self-test to fail, please let us know.

If the self-test prints, but has lines or smudges or other print quality issues, please let us know.

Print cartridge missing

Please remove the cartridges from the printer. Take a dry lint free paper towel and gently wipe the contacts on the back of the cartridge (not the bottom from where ink is present). Wipe the contacts inside the printer (on cartridge carrier). Please snap the cartridges back into the cartridge carrier.

Next, try this printer self-test by following the steps given below:

1. Please turn OFF the printer.
2. Press and hold the "Color copy" button.
3. Now, turn ON the printer.
4. Once you see "0" on the display, release the "Color copy" button.
5. Press the Up arrow button until "2"appears on the display.
6. Press the "Black copy" button to start the self test. Once the page has printed, the printer will stop printing.

The self-test should at least print out a set of either black or color bars, if not both (if you have a printer with both color and black installed simultaneously). Should this test fail, try it again without cartridges installed. If the self-test still fails to take paper in and make sounds like the carrier is moving across the paper, this is a hardware issue, and the printer will require service. If the self-test completes without any cartridges installed, run the self-test again with the color cartridge installed by itself. (If you have both black and color cartridges, after this test, run the test again with just the black cartridge installed.) If you find that either cartridge causes the self-test to fail, please let me know.

If the self-test prints, but has lines or smudges or other print quality issues, let us know. This includes any print quality issues, we need to know if the problems you have with your black or color are based in the printer, or communications with your computer, or the computer's software.

If the self-test prints your test bar(s) clearly, the printer hardware is not at fault.

When printing some lines don't print properly-appears to be just the top half or less of the line will print. It seems it happens every 3rd or 4th line, but has done it on the second line also, so is not...

Try printing out the test page from the printer, this will show you if any of the inkjet holes are getting plugged. If you can't print a test page without the skipping try changing the ink cartridge(s), the test page will show you which one is clogging.

#5 black ink cartridge skips through the middle occasionally

Replacing the print head
The print head may need replacing if, after all print head and ink tank troubleshooting has been performed:

  • The nozzle test appears broken or to have horizontal white streaks.
  • One or more of the colors is missing from the Nozzle Test.
  • The colors are incorrect on the Nozzle Test.
  • A print head error is indicated on the unit.
  • The printer powers off when the print head is installed.
I hope it helps!!!
