Question about Samsung HLN437W 43" Rear Projection HDTV

2 Answers

I am presently working on a Samsung HLN437W. The unit will turn on and all controls on the set or remote work, after a short while all the controls freeze up and do not work. The only way to turn off the unit is to pull the plug. Sometimes it seems to work properly but if you shut it off with the controls and leave it plug in after awhile you cannot turn it back on, you have to unplug it for awhile before plugging it back in. The colour wheel was changed and also the main board. The picture does not freeze the controls are frozen in that the TV does not respond to power, volume , channel or menu from the remote or TV controls.

These are the original problems with the TV, nothing has changed.

Ok, if this were me I would suggest a thermal issue, some component(s)? are heating up, and the system is then hanging up? This can be in one of many places, however the most likely candidate is the switched mode power supply, either this is, or it is being affected or is shutting down the set due to a potential fault, that may be what's called a catastrophic fault, insomuch, as it may result in component failure that may cause a fire an explosion or both. What you describe indeed fits in, the non-starting, the waiting and it then starting, having to plug, unplug, the freezing, this all is indicative of this type of fault. But to be perfectly frank, without examining the set,it is almost impossible to tell exactly.
Seriously these days irrespective of what "others" may say, & I have been servicing for over 30 years, the DIY servicing of modern day TV sets, and for that matter this applies to most electronics, these days. Well it isn't really economic nor practical. to repair, and I see time and time again in these posts and forums, and in my shop, where people embark upon the repair, with hearts & minds full of good intentions and little else, and then often end up with a large bill, a bag of "Boards" and still, a non-working set, and then, they still must either pay a technician, to try and repair it, or purchase another one...

So usually I recommend to all, that the very best and cheapest way to get a working TV set again. Is to take it to a place that deals with the, your, product. Now, always ask first, for a "Quote' as to the cost and nature of the fault/repairs, and then and only then make a decision as to what to do, repair or replace?

That sounds like one of 2 things:

  1. Color wheel
  2. Light engine
Color wheel because of the losing color, but the light engine because of the picture freeze. It's very difficult to judge since I can't be there to see it. I'm leaning toward the light engine though. The only fix is to replace the DMD board, or entire light engine.

The things you replaced ( main board and color wheel) are faulty.
If the repair is on guarantee ,you can take it back for replacement.

Main board and color wheel is not functioning properly.May be it's not a genuine one.

TV Screen 'freezing' while watching.

Most likely the DMD board is at fault. If the DMD board is failing it will hold the data lines in the set down which will cause it to stay on until you unplug it. The part number for the DMD board is BP96-00249A but I suggest you have a technician verify the issue and replace the board as it requires mechanical alignment after wards. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thank you.

The problem I had was with the remote control unit for the steering wheel controls. It shorted out. The head unit was fine. But, when the sterring control unit is shorted it also prevents the hand held remote from working.
