Question about Bunn GR10 Coffee Maker

Coffee is coming out weak. Feels hot. could this be a thermomitor problem

    I just recently bought a Bunn coffeemaker. It was about my 4th one in 20 years. I have always loved the coffee that the Bunn makes, but my new one makes very weak coffee. I took it back and exchanged it for another one--and that one makes weak coffee also. I am very discouraged, as I really like the speed of brewing. Barb

To check the water temperature you need to run a pot with the sprayhead removed. Most Bunnomatics have two forms of heating. The primary heat source is the heater element. It's job is to heat water to the temperature set by Bunn factory technicians. The second heat source is what is called a "keep warm heater". This heater is always on and keeps the water temperature at about 180 degrees. This saves on long heating times while the coffee brewer isn't being used. Now, if the main heating element goes out the brewer is still gonna send about 180 water to the brewbasket. By the time is gets from the air gap in the brewbasket to the grounds and filter it looses about 10 degrees. Coffee (regardless of what that non expert said that burned herself when she put the coffee between her legs says) is brewed at between 190 to 205 degrees for a good cup of coffee. With lawsuits I think alot of restaurants have taken the brew temp down to about 193. So your coffee maybe hot but if it is only using the blanket heater it won't be hot enough to make a good cup of coffee. So check the temperature by using a good electronic thermometer purchased at most hardware stores. If the temp is good start looking elsewhere. The first place is after you brew a pot of coffee do you have a "star" pattern in the used grounds, you should. If not remove the filter basket and run a pot of water into the pot. You may have to get a pan that will fit under it to catch the water if it doesn't drop into the brewer's decanter. You don't wanna make a watery mess. It is imperative that all the holes in the sprayhead are clear of grounds and water is running, not dribbling from them. A clean brewbasket and sprayhead are everything to taste. Also the temp must be above 190deg and It shouldn't take more than three minutes from the time you finish pouring the water in the top until you basically have a full pot (not counting some small dripping at the end). Coffee brewing comes out in a fast steady stream when brewing, coffee doesn't brew properly and comes out weak. taste like unbrewed.


If it comes out in a steady "stream" it sounds like the sprayhead is missing. The sprayhead disperses the water out and evenly over the grounds.
If the sprayhead IS in place then it could be a temperature problem. If the temperature is not hot enough the coffee will not brew correctly.

Coffee too weak


Probably a bad thermal switch. My wife had the same problem with hers and I recently fixed it.

What is the temperature of the coffee when if finishes brewing? It should be around 190 degrees F. If it is cooler than that it indicates the switch is turning the heater down too soon. This means the pot doesn't circulate hot enough water through the grounds and the coffee ends up weak.

WEAK COFFEE & NOT HOT ENOUGH


Basing on personal experience (you can find more on Google probably), solutions are:

On percolated (filter) coffee machines:

Check water temp, if water temp is insufficient , most common is scale heating element , faulty element, faulty thermostat.
Check if water is dripping right at the center of the filter, if it is dripping on one side because the orifice is clogged, that can result in weak coffee.
Coffee blend not well distributed on filter basket.

On Espresso machines:

Check water temp, same as filter coffee machines (thermostat element, scale on heating chamber).
Ensure that coffee is filled correctly in the filter cup (fill at level), and well pressed.
Ensure that the coffee mixture that you are using is not too coarse, buy the apposite one for espresso.
Ensure that you are not leaving the machine brewing for a time that is too long, and Italian coffee cup is very small, approximately one regular shot.

On the hob moka pots (espresso, Moka and Bialetti type):

This are the trickiest ones, you need art and practice to get a good espresso with a Moka, but when you learn, the result is better than what you may get with an home electrical espresso maker.
The frame on the hob must be not too strong, and the mixture coarse but well pressed, with water at level tag, or you will get a weak coffee.
On Mokas a good strategy is keeping hob at minimum, and turning up the flame at top when coffee starts coming out.

French and turkish cafetieres:

Ensure that you put enough coffee, water hot enough, and that you left the infusion enough time to get a strong coffee.

Note: insufficient pressure and clogged lines on electric machines never give you a weak coffee, exactly the opposite.
Not pressed mixture always gives weak coffee, but too much pressed mixture may give you coffee with bad taste.

The water that comes out thru the coffee gounds and into the carafe is only warm not hot.The coffee that is brewed is weak and only warm.

Coffee is weak


Check where the water comes out under the brew filter. It sounds like you may be missing the sprayhead. It is a round metal or plastic piece that is screwed on to the water dispense area and acts like a little showerhead forcing water evenly over the coffee grounds. If it is missing, the coffee will be weak. Check the water temperature. If it isn't hot enough, the coffee will be weak.

Weak coffee


It sounds like you may have lost the sprayhead. It is under the brew basket (above the place where you put the basket with the filter and the coffee). Sometimes they get loose and you don't realize it and it can fall in the grounds and get tossed out after brewing.

Sounds like the thermostat is weak and turning off at too low of temp.
