Question about GE JVM1790SK Convection/Microwave Oven

1 Answer

I have a GE Pofile JVM1790SK 01 microwave/convection over mounted over my cooktop. Even with the vent on high, it just does not pull. You can hear it going. You can feel blowing outside at the vent, but the whole kitchen smokes up if we cook steaks on the cooktop.

I mean, if I am boiling water or cooking steaks on the cooktop, the steam or smoke is not being pulled into the vent. It just rises up and fills my kitchen with said steam or smoke.

Daniel, I have taken the filters off to see if it works better, but it makes no difference. it has NEVER worked properly---not from the day it was installed 2 years ago.. The contractor that installed it has fallen off the face of the earth. But, I don't think he knew how to fix it. He tried and it never pulled any better. He blamed it on the appliance---said his doesn't work well either. But, I think the same person installed them and the problem is in the installation.

It is the GE Profile JVM1790SK. The vent fan is internal. There are two vents under the microwave which are suppose to pull steam/smoke from the cooktop below. It is vented up through our cabinet and out to the back of the house.

Sorry for late response....was checking its parts....you will have to take it apart completely to check the issue...I believe it can be the circulation motor that is bad however, as these parts are usually covered under 3/5yrs warranty so its better to contact the manufacturer and get this done. Please check these diagrams that will help you.

I remember repairing one and I think the vent can be made to vent inside or out. If you have it up wire it up and see what happens to the air flow.right in front of you.

Had you noticed that it was getting weaker? Taking longer to heat a cup of water/coffee? If so then the magnatron was getting weak and gave up the ghost. They are expensive, probably cheaper to get another oven. the other likely failure component is the capacitor. Careful they contain power even when unplugged. Caps are not that $$. good luck

Dead ge microwave

magnetrons work only when the unit is cooking
it smells like an insulation from overheating wire so could be a fuse and failing transformer
take it in for a proper diagnosis and quote but if it is over 2 years old the cost to repair could be more than a replacement unit

GE has the manuals for most of their appliances on their site: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ . Just enter the model number and click Submit.
The direct link to the manual for the JVM1790 Over-the-Range Convection/Microwave oven is here: http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-40480-1.pdf . GE only lists the JVM1790CK, JVM1790BK, JVM1790WK and JVM1790SK.

I hope this helps.

No power to microwave JVM1790SK ...checked outlet and it is live

HELLO.

Since the outlet is live, the power problem is from the microwave.

check on the back of the microvave to locate the fuse that control the supply of power to the microvave.

Change the fuse because it is unable to control power supply.

Then plug the microwave to the outlet.

Thanks .

That's probably a shorted relay on the control circuit board.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one-year guarantee.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Model JVM1790SK 01 Where/how do you change the

This is a pretty bad design, sometimes you can just remove the upper grill and access the light assy. If the panel is to tight to work in to change the light, you get to take the whole micowave down and remove the outer wrapper to change the light bulb. This is also not a standard bulb (part #WB25X10019). You may be able to get one from Lowes or Home Depot actually Sears would be a better bet, otherwise you will need to order one from an appliance parts outlet. Hope this helps and sorry I didn't design the thing I just fix them.

My convection microwave will not heat up in convection mode. the microwave function works just fine. is there a way to troubleshoot and repair the problem?

usually if convection fails means there is problem in magnetron you hear an unusual buzzing noise, the magnetron (the component that actually generates the microwaves) or other electronic module may be broken. This is not easily fixed; contact a service technician.
please do rate me on the above said issue

I have a Ge jvm1790sk and while the microwave is running there is no internal light how do I replace it?

Unplug unit before entering.

The light bulb is behind the air vent at the center top of the microwave. Remove two screws at the very top front of the microwave and pull the vent cover forward at the top. Sliding left is sometimes necessary to release the bottom tabs of the vent cover. The light fixture will be behind this cover.

Good Luck. Reverse the above process to reassemble.
