Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

When the washing machine emptied the water and started spinning, the drum started making an awful grinding noise. After I emptied the drum, I tried to see if still made the noise. When I attempt to turn the drum by hand, it seems to grind at certain parts of the turn. I opened the back of the machine to see if I could spot any problems and I couldn't find anything. The belt is still on and all springs and such seem to be in order. It seems like there is an inner drum that is rubbing up against an outer drum. Is this worth fixing or should I just get a new one?

    Hi Daniel

Just off hand I know it's an Artisan (sp?) front loading machine. I would have to do some checking later for an exact match.

  • cowen72 Mar 31, 2011

Yeah the bearing seems to be okay, and the belt was on. I didn't want to attempt to take anything else apart and it looked like the drum was a contained unit of sorts.

Thank you so much for all your help!!

  • cowen72 Mar 31, 2011

Sorry, I think meant the bearing that is maybe on the inside? The outer bearing that connects to the belt seems to be okay. What nuts would need to be tightened? Where would they be located? I may re-look at that to make sure.

    Thanks!

  • cowen72 Mar 31, 2011

Okay! I will try to find some nuts to tighten, and I will see what I can do about taking the drum apart. With the motor and everything connected, I don't know if I am that mechanically inclined. LOL. Thanks again.

Hi

The issue seems to be with the clutch assembly or the transmission that is bad and should be replaced. It will cost you around $300 if you get this done by a tech, however please post back with its manufacturers name, model no and serial no. for further assistance.

Alright then....as its a front load washer and the belt is fine so the issue can be with the bearing that is bad and to replace this the complete drum assembly has to be replaced however the cost remains same

Then it might be the nuts connecting the drum that are loose and you can tighten them....

Machine makes awful noise during any movement, spins very slowly, not enough to spin out. Making an awful noise, like stripped gears and won't drain

There are three reasons for such awful noise during spinning. Either the drum or the bearing turning the drum. Check for drum bearing failure if your washing machine is noisy on the spin cycle. Drum bearing failure is common when the bearing seals start allowing water to enter. You can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand, and if the drum rumbles, replace the bearings.

Thanks

LG Tromm WM2277HW during high speed spin makes noise

I had exactly the same symptom...grinding noise only during high speed spin cycle.

I took the top and back panels off to see how the drain hoses etc. connected. Not wanting to take it apart further, I eventually just took the washing machine outside (I knew I was going to be dealing with water!), pulled the debris catcher front side bottom, and let rip with a garden hose inside the drum with the catcher out (leaving an open drain that could flow unimpeded).

Water flowed quickly out of the open drain, and lo and behold, a small drill bit came out with the water flow. This bit, presumably had gotten through the drum grating, and was resting on the bottom of the housing, scraping and grinding when the drum was spinning.

Kenmore front load washer #44072 drum banging noise

2 possible issues with your washer.
1 or both the support shocks or springs have broken
the drum would look off center even when empty
or rear bearring has worn out.
this is a very common problem with the fridgidaire washer... (this kenmore is a frigidaire model)
problem is caused by very hard water (well water) or improper use of detergent. this machine uses a High efficency type detergent, marked by "HE" on the detergent container

Grinding Noise when Washer Attempts to Spin

It is probably the same problem because it is trying to drain during the spin cycle. My machine sounded as though a chain wis clanking, the solution was removing a coin caught in the drain pump. Access the pump from the bottom of the machine. 4 screws hold the mounting bracket on undo those, the electrical connection and two hose to the pump. Undo three screws holding impeller to motor and coin can fall out. Examine for damage if it is not too tore up, put back together. Keep in mind that when you unclamp the hoses that water will come out.

Loud grinding motor protesting humming w/no spinning or agitating

The drum/agitator bearings are bad I believe, or the gearbox has been damaged. This is an expensive repair. I would strongly consider buying a new washer. This is a great time to buy appliances since the stores are really competing, and the prices are at their lowest.

If you get rid of the water from the drum chances are that the door lock will then release. Try taking the outlet pipe and laying it down over a bowl to catch the water. If it empties then the door should open in a minute or so. If it does not empty then the pump is probably blocked, and you would need to remove the hose from the bottom of the drum where it connects to the pump, but make sure you either take it outside to do it, or you do it over a bowl to catch the water, and have plenty of towels to mop up the flood. It sounds like the drum bearings have gone and the bits have gone into the pump, or filter.
