Question about Broan-NuTone N-QT140L Combination Light Fan Exhaust Fan

Open Question

We had specified a Nu-Tone QT-140L bathroom fan when we built and over time we didn't think that the fan was exhausting the bath correctly, but did nothing. Over time we saw moisture damage in the cieling. After investigating, I found out that the builder used 4 inch non-insulated flexable ducting which was vented to the house side wall about 10 feet away. I looked at the installation procedure and they spell out using 3 1/4 x 10 inch duct. This pipe reduction along with a leak in the flex duct I feel was the cause for my problems. My question is should I run the 3 1/4 x 10" duct or can I use 6 inch duct. It's a straight run with no elbows and I would have to change the outside vent cap. I guess that I can purchase a 3 1/4 x 10 vinyl vent cap or do I need to adapt to a 6 inch vinyl vent cap if I used 3 1/4 x 10' duct? I want to make sure that I have 150 CFM air flow. Thank you Dave Barclay

SOURCE: NuTone QT80 is not clearing moisture/condensation

This should not be a problem. If you think you need a more powerful fan a there is a 110 CFM replacement fan that will fit in the same housing. The NuTone part# is 0696B000. There are some generic versions out there on ebay and amazon that have been causing people a lot of trouble. I would recommend buying from an Authorized NuTone dealer only.

It sounds like you have indeed bought fluorescent bulbs. manufacturers are encouraged to replace the incandescent bulbs with more energy saving fluorescent bulbs. They are made to look like standard bulbs so you need to look at the package carefully to see the difference. The Nu Tone and other special bulbs may still be available in the old filament style for a while but you may have to look harder or ask if they are still available. The amount of flicker often reflects the quality of the bulb. It will sometimes decrease over time.

Should i use the same drywall in the bathroom as in the rest of the house?

I recommend using MR (Moisture Resistant) drywall for the bathroom, and possibly for the basement if there are moisture issues. It is not much more expensive, and it can save you a big headache later

The replacement motor is available from several sources online. The best way is to purchase the new motor assembly. All you need to do is remove the blower housing from the ceiling, there are three screws that hold the motor assembly in place. The whole job takes about five minutes. Here are a few sites with the motor.

I have just had a brand new bathroom fitted. The first time I stood in the bath I heard crunching noises like popping crystals. The bath engineer said it was delaminating. How should this be dealt with?...

You shouldn't hear anything...............I think as your bath engineer didn't use cedar shims under the pertinent points of your bath to make it stable taking in to account, the drainage of the unit as well.............Hope this helps.

It is actually a better value to purchase the motor assembly S97017706 or S97017705, both fit.

Nu Tone Bath Exhaust Fan - QT-110N-B - motor vibrating

You can buy just the motor assembly. You would remove the grill. Usually there is a plug to disconnect the motor. Remove screw(s) and the motor and fan assembly will come out leaving the rough in housing in the ceiling. I did not locate your model number as you listed it however the QT line has numerous model numbers. Here is a link to the nutone page. You should be able to purchase a "trim kit" which would include the fan, motor, and grill. You can either buy it on-line, or you might try an electrical supply company.

Exahaust fan not working

The best thing to do is buy the replacement motor. It is usually a pretty simple thing to change out and it sure beats having to take down the whole thing. Here is an article on finding the right motor. http://nutoneproducts.blogspot.com/2009/05/nutone-bath-fan-motor-replacement.html
