Why is my Briggs and Stratton mower dragging? It won't turn over fast enough to start

If it is an OHV engine the valves are needing adjusting normally as the decompression system quits working causing high compression at start-up speed.

Can't get exmark mower with Kawasaki motor to start

Have had this problem with the Kawasaki engines and found the starter to be bad. The old starter was turning it over but was not fast enough to start. Have also found weak battery that did the same. The first one I ran into was a FH680 Kawasaki and spent about 2 hours trying to figure it out and it came down to the starter not turning it fast enough. Put a new starter on and started at just the bump of the switch. Let me know if this helps you out

Riding mower will not turn over fast enough to start. remove plug and turns over fine.

Sounds like brushes in your starter may be worn. Or dirty terminals on battery and or solenoid.

Mower cranks with throttle in choke. after cranked and throttle moved to fast or any other position. The mower dies as if someone turns it off??

Ok I assume what you are trying to say is that once it starts with the choke on and you turn the choke off it dies.
This behavior usually means that the engine is leaning out. This means that it is not getting enough gas. Often if you put it back to choke fast enough it will keep running though very roughly.
The problem is the main metering jets are plugged or there is some kind of obstruction in the carburetor. This is assuming of course that the tank is full of gas and the fuel filter is clean.

18.5 hp engine will not turn over fast enough to start. appears to be in a bind. New battery and used jumper cables. Still will not turn over fast enough to start. Appears to be firing before it...

I have seen this many times and most people think there starter or battery is the problem. 9 times out of 10 it's not. You need to check your valve clearances. On overhead valves this is not hard at all. You just have to have the proper tools and know how. You will have to call your local dealer (engine) to get your valve settings.

Craftsman mower will start with pull but not with

When it turns over, is it somewhat sluggish (not as fast as before)? I would suspect your battery is weak, and the voltage drops so low that the engine does not spin fast enough to start. Also, without knowing what type mower this is (which model) it could be the voltage drops too low to generate spark (if equipped with an ignition module)

Whereby pull starting it, you aren't loading the voltage down with the starter, and the ignition module still works... So it starts.

Charge the battery per the owners manual. If that doesn't help, you may need a new battery, or you may have a bad connection between the battery and starter solenoid (heavy cables). If a connection has high resistance, it will drop more voltage at a given current.
