Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB External USB 2.0 - WDH1U5000N 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a new WD Elements 1 TB external hard drive to just save all my pics onto. I plugged it into the USB it installed drivers and I started copying over years worth of pics. Then it got real slow then it quit...now my computer (Acer Aspire 5536-5142) wont read it at all. I did uninstall the drivers I think and format the new external hard drive thinking I would just start all over but...nothing works! Please help! BTW, I did and always do 'safely remove' my drives/cards/etc.

> I have a new ... external hard-drive

If it is less than TWELVE MONTHS old, then its WARRANTY is still valid.

EXERCISE the warranty to get it repaired/replaced at _minimal_ cost to you.

My WD Elements SE External drive does not have its driver recognized on boot, but does only after repluging its USB 2.0 connection. How do I get the driver recognized on boot? Why does replugging work

I guess it's some kind of a problem with the way your USB port works. I have an external WD too, connected to a USB 3.0 port and definitivly it's not detected at boot, just after windows startup as a USB device.
After some initial wondering about this problem, I decided no to worry more because I use external drive for data backup and if it is not detected by BIOS makes no difference.
It might be a problem of an outdated BIOS or the USB port's driver. In my case, boths, BIOS and USB 3.0 are rather old.
You can do some reading about issue if you do a ggogle search for issue

Install the hard drive in to a new usb enclosure assuming the hard drive itself is not the cause of the problem.

Hi, i m arif and i purchase new wd hard drive 1 tb but as i connect the hard drive ask driver? what can i do sir, please solve my problem

You shouldn't need any drivers for it, but just in case you're on non-updated version of Windows XP, you can find a relevant system update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704
Download the package that applies to your OS (probably the first choice) and install it. You might need to restart your PC after installation finishes, after which you should be able to format your new external hard disk and start using it. Hope this helps!

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

My 1 tb WD hard drive isn't even being recognized

If the 1 tb is spinning up, which I assume it is, the new PC (assuming a Win 7 OS) should see it and mount a driver to be able to talk with it. I would double check all my connections at the drive and the PC, try different USB ports just in case one is dead.
