Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

Freezer running at 0 to 10 below but fridg wont go below 42. Cold control tested good. Cleaned bottom was really dirty brushed an vacumed no improvement. Air flow from vent in rear of refrigator compartment is very weak. Is this just the cold air flowing downward due to a broken fan. Should cold air flow be strong.Just wanted to know before I start taking things apart to test fan. This a GE freezer on top[ model TBX18K. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • the fan could also be the problem, and like you said a visual inspection of the fan should clarify that. sometimes the plastic fan blade gets loose on the metal shaft of the fan motor and it will not turn very fast.

  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Fridge freezer not very cold

Hi,

Same thing happened to my fridge freezer recently and it ended up being dirty coils. I would pull the fridge out if you haven't already and see if there is any build up around the coils. Mine had a lot of dust and who knows what else because the coils on my fridge were located underneath the fridge where many fridges have them on the back. Also some fridges have both(one for the fridge and other for freezer) but yours sounds like it has one coil for both fridge and freezer since both are being impacted. I used a soft bristle brush to clean mine and it did the trick.
I hope this helps and isn't something worse like a Freon charge or compressor going bad. If you pull out the fridge and there's a dark substance, that's a sign of the compressor going out.

Sub zero 532. freezer works fine --0 degrees. fridge wont get below 50 degrees. cleaned condenser fins- still no decrease in temp

check the fan that runs between the freezer and the fridge --check fan for ice blockage -debris-or damage / clean or clear blockage --if not running test wiring and connections as well as motor /repair or replace //also check fan damper is not frozen or blocked its flap that opens and closes for air to flow //----ur fridge side is cooled from the the freezer side the cold air is blown in from the freezer if fan or damper is not working correctly than fridge is usually warm and freezer is working properly

Top refrigerator warm bottom is ice cold.

An automatic defrost time turns the defrost cycle on and off every 24 hours. If problem continues, problem is most likely defective defrost timer.

Even electronically controlled units often have electro-mechanical timers for defrost cycle.

American fridge/freezer - fridge stopped cooling, freezer side ok

Have you pulled out the refrigerator and cleaned or used a vacum cleaner to get out the dirt and dust off the back of the coils, or if the coils are underneath, you need to get an inexpensive appliance brush for fridge, and clean the coils under the fridge, pull off the panel on the front bottom of the fridge, get a flash light and look to see if the coils are covered in dust....may just need to vacum and use appliance brush underneath...this should be done at least one a year, you will notice your fridge running much better and cooling back to normal.......hope this helps......

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

How old is your refrigerator? Old enough for lint and dust to have accumulated around the bottom fan and coils?

Dirty coils can cause a multitude of problems and even give the appearance of a failing unit. Try cleaning the coils with a brush and vacuum as thoroughly as you can and be sure the bottom fan is running to pull air over them. It's a 'free' fix and you'd be surprised at how often such a simple 'repair' is all there was wrong with a refrigerant unit.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
