Before the welcome screen - bypassing administrator password - need to login into Windows

I am the administrator of our home based computer (Microsoft Windows XP SP2). My problem started when I tried to upgrade to SP3 all heck broke lose back in June 2008. I started experiencing all sorts of errors, including Windows not allowing me to acknowledge my password as the administrator for our home computer. I cannot even log in as a user. It does not acknowledge my password, the password that I had been using since time immemorial. Aside from hiring a tech geek, what is the solution to this problem? If you can recommend anything including opening and getting the motherboard out and resetting it through the motherboard, will appreciate your sending step by step instructions. I have yet to find an answer; I had been email everybody and had gone on various websites including Microsoft's website and nobody has shown me the right fix for this problem. I just need to get into my computer and I can pretty much take it from there. I have to get in first though. Thanks so very very very much.

i do have the original installation disk but my problem lies with the fact that i couldn't even begin to go beyond the logon menu since everytime i attempted to use my admin login name and password, it says that it does not recognize my admin name and password. i am afraid i will not be able to fix the problem if I cannot get into the system.

This is going to be a bit of a long drawn out process OR if you are up for it there is a quick fix.
I am the securities moderator on another site and I have seen this problem many times, the problem is service pack 2 and 3 trying to install when there is malware already in existence on the machine.
I can walk you through quite a lengthy process of clearing your machine of malware or you can save all your personal files then format and reinstall Windows.
Either way it's your choice and I can help you with both.

Do you have your original Windows installation disk or is your machine one that utilises a recovery partition on the harddrive?

  • Richard Finch Aug 13, 2008

Follow the instructions on this site to the letter, these instructions will take you through the proccess of reinstalling Windows, you will think you are about to format your harddrive and lose all your personal files but, at that moment "SetUp" discovers your original installation and offers to repair it.

To repair your installation of Windows SetUp will replace all the system files, you will have to reinstall every update you have done from when you first installed Windows (service packs, updates and antivirus software). I have done this repair mant times and like I said earlier you must follow the instructions to the letter.

Once you are all done if you want advice on security applications such as antivirus and spyware please let me know.

How do I logon as administer

The built-in Administrator account is hidden from Welcome Screen when a user account with Administrator privileges exists and enabled. In Windows XP Home Edition, you can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only. For XP Professional, press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password in the classic logon window that appears.
To have the Administrator account displayed in the Welcome Screen, try one of these methods:
Method 1: Using TweakUI Power Toy for Windows XP Download TweakUI from here: v2.00 for Windows XP | v2.10 for XP SP1 and above
Open TweakUI and click "Logon" option in the left pane. Put a checkmark against the option "Show Administrator on Welcome Screen". Click OK to close TweakUI. Logoff and see if Welcome Screen lists Administrator login. Changes are immediate and you can use the Winkey + L to switch back to Welcome Screen to see Administrator account is listed.
Use this procedure to hide/unhide any user account from the Welcome Screen. Please remember, you can still login to a hidden account using CTRL+ALT+DEL classic logon method, but cannot Fast User Switch to a hidden user account.
Method 2 - Manual registry edit
  • Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList
  • Use the File, Export option to backup the key
  • Create a new DWORD Value named Administrator
  • Double-click Administrator, and set 1 as its data
  • Exit the Registry Editor.
For Windows XP Home Edition While you can configure Windows XP Home Edition to show Administrator account in the Welcome Screen, you cannot login as Administrator in Normal mode. Visit the following link for more information:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction

Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

Forgot my administrator password for windows xp can go into safe mode (F8 at logo when booting up) and enter as administrator and then go to accounts and change windows password and that's with XP. I haven't forgotten password for a pc before but can enter any XP pc in safe if the owner hasn't gone into safe mode and designated a password for "administrator" and usually only have a password for the user account but never have tried on Vista or Win7.
2.if that does not work, you can use software to reset the windows password I know a windows password tool just like below Windows Password Key 8.0

I cant remember my password to get on my computer how do i get on it

Firstly windows has an account called "administrator" which doesn't normally show up on the welcome screen but you can get to it either by booting in safe mode (it does show up on the welcome screen when in safe mode) or by pressing ctrl+alt+del at the welcome screen to get an old fassioned login dialog. Often this account will have no password on it.

If the administrator account is locked out or has a password on it then there is a third party password reset and account unlocking tool available from
