Network Setup for Pixma MP970

I am able to get my printer to operate directly from the computer but trying to set it up on wired LAN is a different story. When I get to the section of Setting Printer IP it will not connect. I have tried every possible way. One suggestion is to try next address. What is the address as there is nothing in the manual as suggested- either printer or computer. Also at this point it starts asking if a LAN connection is connected. I can't work out why when the setup connection is to be done with USB.

Unfortunately I am one of those users who just wants to plug in the printer and go. The instructions are very unclear and difficult to follow. Can you help?

To my knowledge all firewalls and security were turned off as required by the manual. I have copies of the manual which is no help. Also to do an online fix puts my computer very much at risk.

the easiest way to do it is to go to the computer with the printer attached, go to control panel, and printers, right click the printer you want to use and click sharing.
click the radial button "share this printer" and give it a meaningful name.
the go to your laptop, go to start, run and type the ipaddress of the computer connected to the printer in the form
\\nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn\ this will bring up all the shared folders and printers available on the computer. right click the printer and choose connect.
the rest of the process will be similar to installing a normal windows printer. it will appear in the windows print menus like any other printer.

of course you will need to leave the main computer powered on, not necessarily logged in, to be able to print from the laptop.

If your printer is connected wired directly to a router , you can just let the printer get its IP address from your router and don't forget to set the printer as a network printer...

Hope that helps.......

To set a Windows XP/Vista computer to print directly to a printer, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, then Printers and Faxes (Windows XP) or Windows icon, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, then Printer (Windows Vista). Double-click Add a Printer to start the "Add Printer Wizard," then click Next.

    2. You will be given an option between Local Printer and Network Printer. Select Local Printer. Make sure the Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer is not selected (Windows XP), then click Next. Select Create a new port in the Type field, then select Standard TCP/IP Port. Click Next (twice in Windows XP).

    3. In the Printer Name or IP Address field, enter the Domain (host) name of the printer (e.g., which you received from the Hostmaster in response to your request for a fixed IP address. Click Next, then Finish.

    4. If you are placed back in the Select the Printer Port window, make sure that Use the following port is selected. From the list, select the Standard TCP/IP Port you just created. It should appear at the bottom of the list. Click Next.

    5. Select the manufacturer and printer model, or select Have Disk if you are going to install the drivers from a CD or have installed them from the Web. Click Next.

    6. In the Name field, enter the name that will identify your printer on your computer. Specify whether you want this printer to be the default printer. Click Next. Select Do not share printer, then click Next twice. Click Finish. The printer should now be accessible from your computer.

    7. You should be able to print a test page on the printer.

    Hope that helps....

It indeed is a bit of a complex problem as you may have a firewall program and it may be blocking the connection also.

Best to try following the manual, or we could do a remote support session tomorrow and figure it out.

the network setup guide is available in the downloads section of this webpage

    Page 7 in the manual.

can you follow those instructions? do you want me to set it up with you?

The program I use, is very simple, fast and secure. there is no risk to your computer, the risk to your computer is having your firewall off, you can turn your firewall On while I help you with remote support.

  • Ekse Aug 05, 2008

actually its probably better that you turn the firewall on right away.

  • Ekse Aug 05, 2008

I would suggest to try following the instructions on page 7, step by step, don't rush, take your time.

My Epson Label printer is showing as not connected when its connected, when trying to set up or add as new printer.

What shows mac and ip address ? printer or pc ?
If the printer displays them, it means the printer in connected to router electrically.
Check subnet mask and gateway address.
Could be set wrong if the router is not on DHCP.

I guess the issue is in the ethernet components / settings.
Start isolation by elimination of the following
1. Computer -
2. Wifi connection to the router (or)
3. Patch cable connecting computer to the wall -
4. Router -
5. Patch cable connecting the printer to the wall -
6. Printer -

The LAN printer cannot connect to Computer (PC/Mac) directly unless you use a Cross over cable.

After installing the software for my lan,I am getting "printer is offline"

If you are talking about installing the Lan card of the laptop ..and after that getting errors from the printer..I think that you installed it while the printer was hooked up ..and it seen the printer's card while doing ..and messed up with it ..
If the printer is on network ..just rest it to factory settings ..and make the settings again ..and after that run the driver in the laptop ..without the printer hooked up ..until it asks for it ..This will make it detectable again ..and run OK >.
another thing you can do is to run the printer and faxes wizard and locate the printer again ..but net before you turn it off..unplug from power and laptop it if you can ..and that plug it back to be recognized by the laptop again ..
If this will not cover your problem ..please explain in details what exactly you what conditions ..and what you need to do ..(how is the printer connected)

Hello, My name is Susan Hewitt. I have had a Canon MX310 All in one printer now for a couple of years. Recently I had to buy a new computer, called Emachines. To make a long story short, when I went to add...

You can still download the driver and the software for your printer to communicate and work with your computer from the Canon Official website for "Free". If you did mention the Operating System running on your Emachine, I could make the instructions more specific with the direct link, well, let me try my best to make you understand.

Open this link (Click Here), click "Drivers & Softwares" [screenshot below #.1]

Screenshot No.1.

The select O.S. (Operating System)..
Screenshot No.2.

You have to select one of the operating systems listed in the drop-down lists, i.e. Windows 7 or Windows XP or Windows Vista.
Once the operating system is selected, all the available softwares and drivers supported by the selected Operating System for the printer will be displayed as link...

Here I am going to demonstrate that I've selected Windows 7...
After "Windows 7" is clicked, I see another Menu as shown below:
Screenshot No.3.

The first one from the list is the Basic driver to communicate the printer with the computer which is running Windows 7. Click "mx310swin101ej.exe" and wait for a couple of seconds, then click "I Agree - Begin Download" button at the bottom of the page, Save it means, download it and then install it after the download's completed. You'll be asked to connect the printer during the installation, do so after the printer is turned On.
Download all the softwares from the lists and install them, your printer should work without any problem.

Note: The files name mentioned might be different for different Operating System, but you'll be able to see which one should be downloaded from the download section page.

If you have problem, let me know with more details.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

6310 on wireless LAN

Sorry to say but this printer don't have a wireless capability, it only works on Hi-Speed USB , Ethernet 10 Base-T/100 Base-TX. But if you want to make it wireless you can use a wireless print server from different manufacturer like Linksys WPS54G.

How to network two computers and one printer trough a netgear FS105 switch?

Connect your two computers to netgear swtich with Ethenret lan cable into LAN port.
Then set ip address in both computer in network adapter property same subnet mask and gateway ip is different .
Means if you give ip to 1 computer you can give ip to another computer.
Then both computer are in network.
Then if your printer is network printer then you can connect your printer with lan cable to switch then set ip ion printer same way.
But if you haven;t network printer then you can connect printer into 1 computer then share your printer in contol panel->printer and faxes if you use windows then right click on printer icn then click on share so you can use it in network.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Epson sx510w prints using a cable but can't get it to print wireless

The specs for your model Epson allows you to connect the you network by wireless and by LAN cable.

The specs are as follows :-
Wi-Fi Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11b/g – compatible with 802.11n*
*Transmission rate will be limited to 802.11g and will operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency band
Ethernet Wired LAN IEEE 802.3 (100BASE-TX, 10BASE-T)
Other PictBridge
Wireless security
WEP – 64bit
WEP – 128bit
WPA – PSK (TKIP) – compliant with WPA2
WPA – PSK (AES) – compliant with WPA2

To connect the printer by a LAN cable you need to configure the Epson for an IP address that suits your network configuration and connect the LAN cable to your wireless router/hub.

The reason why you cannot print using wireless is because the wireless configuration in the Epson is not setup with the router's wireless configuration ie. SSID WPA encryption etc.

For instructions of setting up a LAN network printer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

For instructions on setting up a wireless printer, the Epson wireless settings need to be configured with the router's wireless settings. Go into your router's wireless and note the SSID, and encryption settings etc and configure the Epson's wireless settings with the router's wireless settings. This will allow the Epson to connect to the wireless router. Please click on this link for instructions to secure your wireless network, configure the wireless router (if you have not already do so) and configure the wireless card in the computers and wireless printer (the instructions for configuring the wireless card in the printer is the same as for the wireless card in the computers via the printer's menu screen).

Lan cable Setting for Switch & PC to PC LAN Connection.

If you are asking about connecting two computers together with a hub or switch, plug them into the switch/hub with standard patch cables (cat 5e or cat 6).

If you are asking about connecting two computers together directly using a LAN cable, then you will need a "Crossover" cable (cat 5e) wired specially (oranges transposed at one end for the common -B pattern) for direct LAN connection.

No lights

Is there a computer connected directly to the router? Possible that the router do not detect any physical connection on it. if none of the number light light up it means that there might be no computer directly connected to the router .

Have you tried connecting your computer to a different port? how about using a different cable? How about a different computer? if theres a computer connected to it hardwired but still no light, try to connect your computer to the other ports of the router and check if the lights will come on. if not, try a different cable and a different computer. Possible that t could be a defective port, defective cable, defective lan card or the driver of the lan card on the pc is not properly installed that's why the pc is not detected
