Network Setup for Pixma MP970

I am able to get my printer to operate directly from the computer but trying to set it up on wired LAN is a different story. When I get to the section of Setting Printer IP it will not connect. I have tried every possible way. One suggestion is to try next address. What is the address as there is nothing in the manual as suggested- either printer or computer. Also at this point it starts asking if a LAN connection is connected. I can't work out why when the setup connection is to be done with USB.

Unfortunately I am one of those users who just wants to plug in the printer and go. The instructions are very unclear and difficult to follow. Can you help?

To my knowledge all firewalls and security were turned off as required by the manual. I have copies of the manual which is no help. Also to do an online fix puts my computer very much at risk.

HI,

the easiest way to do it is to go to the computer with the printer attached, go to control panel, and printers, right click the printer you want to use and click sharing.
click the radial button "share this printer" and give it a meaningful name.
the go to your laptop, go to start, run and type the ipaddress of the computer connected to the printer in the form
\\nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn\ this will bring up all the shared folders and printers available on the computer. right click the printer and choose connect.
the rest of the process will be similar to installing a normal windows printer. it will appear in the windows print menus like any other printer.

of course you will need to leave the main computer powered on, not necessarily logged in, to be able to print from the laptop.

If your printer is connected wired directly to a router , you can just let the printer get its IP address from your router and don't forget to set the printer as a network printer...

Hope that helps.......

To set a Windows XP/Vista computer to print directly to a printer, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, then Printers and Faxes (Windows XP) or Windows icon, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, then Printer (Windows Vista). Double-click Add a Printer to start the "Add Printer Wizard," then click Next.

    2. You will be given an option between Local Printer and Network Printer. Select Local Printer. Make sure the Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer is not selected (Windows XP), then click Next. Select Create a new port in the Type field, then select Standard TCP/IP Port. Click Next (twice in Windows XP).

    3. In the Printer Name or IP Address field, enter the Domain (host) name of the printer (e.g., printToMe.dartmouth.edu) which you received from the Hostmaster in response to your request for a fixed IP address. Click Next, then Finish.

    4. If you are placed back in the Select the Printer Port window, make sure that Use the following port is selected. From the list, select the Standard TCP/IP Port you just created. It should appear at the bottom of the list. Click Next.

    5. Select the manufacturer and printer model, or select Have Disk if you are going to install the drivers from a CD or have installed them from the Web. Click Next.

    6. In the Name field, enter the name that will identify your printer on your computer. Specify whether you want this printer to be the default printer. Click Next. Select Do not share printer, then click Next twice. Click Finish. The printer should now be accessible from your computer.

    7. You should be able to print a test page on the printer.

    Hope that helps....

It indeed is a bit of a complex problem as you may have a firewall program and it may be blocking the connection also.

Best to try following the manual, or we could do a remote support session tomorrow and figure it out.

the network setup guide is available in the downloads section of this webpage

    Page 7 in the manual.

can you follow those instructions? do you want me to set it up with you?

The program I use, is very simple, fast and secure. there is no risk to your computer, the risk to your computer is having your firewall off, you can turn your firewall On while I help you with remote support.

  • Ekse Aug 05, 2008

actually its probably better that you turn the firewall on right away.

  • Ekse Aug 05, 2008

I would suggest to try following the instructions on page 7, step by step, don't rush, take your time.

I cannot install my Epson workforce 600 and get it to accept the IP address for my cisco linksys E1000 router.

I actually own a workforce 600 printer... they are nice for photos... anyway, the following solution only applies if your router is configured as a DHCP Server... This is the default setting, so if you don't know, then it is probably is configured as a DHCP Server. So, First, plug your printer directly into the router (wired connection) Then, load all drivers and software onto your computer. There will be one program in particular that you want to use. It is called "EpsonNet Config". Open that program (it is located in start---> all Programs--->EpsonNet---> EpsonNet Config Vx ) If your printer does not show up, you must verify your network settings on the printer (First make sure your wireless is disabled in Setup ----> Network settings --->Wireless LAN setup ----> Disable.... Then, Setup ----> Network settings ---> general network setup ------> "Yes" ---> press"ok"----> "Auto" ---->press"ok"---->"yes") Now, go back to EpsonNet Config on your computer and click refresh (upper left hand corner). When your printer shows up, double click on it. In the left pane click on network---> basic (wireless). In the right pane, click enable wireless LAN, then type in your SSID (routers name). DO NOT CLICK TRANSMIT YET. Then, in the left pane, click "network ----> security". In the right pane, put in the appropriate security level and key for your router. This information you would have configured when you setup your router. Now... click transmit then "ok". Wait for the settings to transmit 100%. now you can remove the network cable... verify that EpsonNet Config still can see the printer. and you are good to go. I hope this helps.

3. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the Username and Password are case sensitive).
4. Click on wireless settings in the left hand side menu Under Setup.
5. Change the network name SSID to some other name.
6. Select security options as 'WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)'.
7. Set the 'Authentication Type' as 'Automatic' and Set the 'Encryption Strength' as 64-bit.

Click on LAN IP setup from the left menu.

1. Change the IP address of the router from 192.168.1.1 to a free IP of your existing DHCP network.

Obtain the IP address of your printer. Go to Setup > Network Settings > Confirm Settings If it starts with 192, that's good. If it's 169 or 0, do the ff : --- 1. Reset the Network settings. Go to Setup > Restore Default Settings > Network Settings 2. Run the Wireless LAN Setup. Go to Setup > Network Settings > Wireless LAN Setup 3. Make sure you can see your network name or SSID which is provided by the router manufacturer. 4. Enter your network key and enter it as it is (CaSe sensitive). 5. Obtain the IP address. Make sure it starts with 192. 6. Now run the software on your computer and add the printer.

Wireless Printer Setup

For installing a wireless printer on Windows XP, wireless router is an essential device.

Follow the recommended steps mentioned on the installation CD of the router, and set-up a wireless network.

Since several computers or laptops will access the printer, it0 1is recommended to connect the wireless printer to the main computer through the USB port.

To begin the installation process on Windows XP, access the network setting in the Control Panel, and activate the file and printer sharing option in the LAN setting.

This will allow the operating system to recognize the availability of a wireless printer.

Now, click the Start button, go to Devices and Printers, select Add a Printer option.

Click the second option- Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

The computer will search for available printer and reflect it on the screen.

Click Finish; and the printer is ready to begin the printing process.
