You can change it by accessing the router's management console, which is usually 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254. refer to your router's manual to find out, if it is different than the ones listed above. It should be listed under wireless settings.

I need the IP for my Router

Encryption is your first line of defense on your wireless network. While it may prove harmless in most cases for someone to connect to an unsecured network and browse the Internet, not everyone has such innocent intentions. People exist who instead are exploiting that opportunity for personal gain at your expense. You have two encryption options, either WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) or WPA (Wireless Protected Access), with WPA being the most updated version offering the best protection for wireless routers. Keep in mind, if you have an older router, it may not support WPA, while newer routers will offer both options. While exact procedures may vary among routers, for the most part, changing from WEP to WPA follows the same patterns.

Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on the back on your router. An Ethernet cable resembles a phone cord, but much thicker and hooks up just like a phone cable into a phone jack. Open your Web browser and type in http://192.618.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 as the default address to connect to your router. Input your user name and password on the log-in screen. This is usually the default unless changed. If you are unsure of the default, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your router. Look for the option "Wireless Settings" on the menu once you log in and click it. Click on the option for "Wireless Network" and either type in the name of your network or click on the name, depending on your router's menu setup. Click on the "Security Options" menu and select the "WPA" option from the list provided. If you have WEP on your network already, you will find this option selected. You will simply change this option. Type in your desired password where requested on the screen and click on the "Apply" option to save your settings.

How do I password protect my WBR-1310 for my iMac?

First you have to access the router through web browser (Internet Explorer) by typing the IP address of your router in the address bar, which is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and lookup for the options to do the following: -
1. Change the SSID (Name) of the router
2. Change the default administrative user name and password (unless you've configured otherwise, the default username is admin and the password password.)
(The above step would prevent unauthorized access to your router)

Next step is to secure it:
1.On the left-hand side, under Setup, click "Wireless Settings" 2.Under "Security Options", select your desired encryption method (preferably WPA2-PSK)
3.Choose a Network Key - it can be anything, as long as it's 8-63 characters in length
4. Click Apply

Now your router and your connection would become secure and the user has to provide the network key to access the internet.

Hope this Helps!

Change wireless network name, how and where?

The wireless network name is defined by the router (access point), not your individual wireless card (bridge). The manual for your wireless router will tell you how to change the name of your wireless network.

Wireless wrt54g not working. it has been working in the past

Saver yourself some time. Go buy a new wireless router. I've worked with a lot of this and I've only seen 3 wireless routers die. They were ALL Linksys routers.

HOW TO HOOK UP MY LABTOP TO THE NET WITHOOUT USING A ETHERNET CORD

Hey BARKLY54,

If you didn't have the opportunity to write down your wireless security passkey/phrase previously, you should still be able to obtain it by accessing your wireless router's main menu. This is normally done by visiting one of the following websites from a computer that is already connected to the wireless network, or is hard-wired into the router itself:

192.168.0.1
or
192.168.1.1

Please keep in mind that the default address you'll need to visit may vary depending on your router model, so you may wish to refer to your owner's manual documentation for more information.

Once you've gotten to this page, you should be prompted to provide a user name and password to access the router's main menu. This default user name and password are generally provided in the owner's manual as well (or in documentation given to you by your ISP if you had that company set up your network), unless you have made any changes to these in the past.

After you’ve signed in, you should be able to find your wireless network passkey/phrase under an option named something similar to “Wireless Settings” or “Wireless Security.”

It is important to remember however, that any changes made while in the router’s main menu (intentional or accidental) can have a direct impact on every device currently connected to the wireless network. If you’re not sure how to proceed, I would strongly suggest contacting your ISP or local technical support agent for more information.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
