my TGA Eclipse mobility scooter will not start. It was working perfectly before I brought it on holiday, diagnostic light flashing 5 times. battery is fully charged and new 4 weeks ago. as on holiday cannot take it to dealer. we are in south of france. all previous reply seemed to refer to motor scooter and talked about break leaver which this does not have.

  • patmayes Mar 31, 2011

    new battery not new scooter

  • patmayes Mar 31, 2011

scooter mobility will only deal with us if we bought from them. It seems that the brake is stuck on even though the lever is in the drive position. Scooter under 2 years, battery 4 weeks old.

The TGA Eclipse does indeed have a brake, it located on the side of the motor, check the connections to this brake from the controller

Disconnect the battery cables and allow it to remain disconnect for at least 10 minutes. Doing this should allow the electronics to reset themselves and solve the problem. If that fails, in the UK call
0800-046-8136. They can help you over the phone.

Did disconnecting the battery for ten minutes allow the unit to reset itself, as I suggested?

patmayes, I'll be away this weekend, but would like to know how it worked out for you in the end. I'm sure this puts a damper on your holiday in southern France, but I hope you will make the best of it.

Are you pulling in the left brake lever? All scooters require that you pull the rear brake lever as you push the start button. It's a safety to keep the scooter from rolling away if you have too much throttle and it's on the ground.

Starting Elements

To start a scooter, four things need to happen: the ignition has to be on, so make sure the ignition switch is in the "on" position. Make sure the kill switch near the right handle grip is in the "on" position. If this switch is not turned on the scooter will not start. Squeeze the left brake lever when starting the scooter---the safety interlocks will prevent the scooter from starting if the brake is not on. Last, be sure the starter button has been depressed. If the starter relay is not able to transfer power to the starter motor the scooter will not start, so be sure to check the relay first.

Use a Test Light

If your scooter is not starting, use a test light to make sure there is adequate power. Use that test light to check the post at the starter to make sure it is hot. If the post is hot, the next thing to check is the wire that runs from the starter switch to the starter relay. When the starter is depressed the test light should register 12 volts. If the test light does not read 12 volts the starter switch is probably bad. If the reading is 12 volts, the starter relay is good and you should check the wire running from the starter relay to the solenoid. If that wire is not hot, the starter relay will need to be replaced.

Check for Spark

If the scooter turns over, but does not start, check for spark before doing any other troubleshooting. To check for spark, remove the spark plug from the cylinder, hold the tip of the plug against the cylinder head and crank the engine. If the ignition system is working properly, you should see a spark jump across the gap. If there is no spark, the ignition coil or electronic ignition module will need to be replaced. If the spark is good use a test light to check the wire which runs from the starter relay to the starter solenoid. If the test light registers insufficient voltage the starter relay is probably defective and will need to be replaced.

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can - and will - happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

I turn key on celebrity scooter. everything looks normal. all lights on, but does not run.

Are the lights flashing or steady? If they are steady and indicate that the battery is charged, make sure that the freewheel/manual brake release lever is in the drive position. If the lights are blinking, then you can visit this site to locate the type of controller on your scooter to try and determine what the problem may be:
If you continue to have problems, please contact Pride Mobility Technical Support for assistance.
Good luck!

Barb the flashes indicate a brake problem. Make sure that you aren't in freewheel. Move the freewheel lever located at the rear of your scooter up and down a few times then put it in drive mode and turn the scooter on and see if you still get 5 flashes If so you will have to replace the brake assembly Hope this helps
