Question about Zoom H2 Digital Voice Recorder

1 Answer

I have just cooked my Zoom H2 in the UK - I forgot to check if the power adaptor was sutable for 240V AC - it wasn't (i.e 110V). The H2 powers up OK with batteries but... they get warm and the unit asks to be switched off after about 5 mins. Any chance of a fix at less than the cost of a new unit? Thanks

Small electronics aren't usually 'repaired'.

For sure the adapter is cooked, right?

If you're really not from the UK you may not have the time for an eBay purchase. Look around for an electronics store that sells 9v adapters. You might try to get one and see how that works out.

If you DO have the time or are staying for awhile:

And the unit without a power supply can be replaced with careful bidding on eBay (meaning one single bid at about 5 seconds to go) for as little as 22 Euro.

Hello what kind of voltage use the power adapater?

The power adaptor has normally two voltages.
One is primary (Input) which is 110V AC in USA. 220V in UK and others. There are now a days Adaptors which accept both 220V and 110V. However the Adaptor pin will differ. It will be Flat pins for 110V and Round pins for 220V.

The other voltage is the Output which is fed to the Equipment and is Equipment specific. It can be 18V to 5.2 Volt DC. It varies equipment to equipment.. If a wrong Adaptor with output Voltage not matching with equipment requirement is selected, it may damage the equipment. Be careful.

Connected alesis sr16 with alesis 110v power supply.to 240v mains...........briefly powered up and then nothing. Have I "fried" the adapter or the sr16?

Look carefully at the adaptor and see if it takes any voltage besides 110 (it will say in very tiny print, you will need a magnifying glass). if it does NOT say 220V or 240V then you friend the adaptor. Get another adaptor - most are "dual" voltage meaning they run in the U.S. or overseas.

Also check for "polarity" (which part of your plug is + or - ).

Using dryer in 220V country

There are two systems in use in the states
110v dryers are available that fit a standard 11v 15a socket
110/220v fit the oversize 'dryer' sockets, and they are two 110v phases 90 degreees apart
the motor runs of a single phase 110v.
there is 220v between the 'outside', the active lines of the two phases, at any time, but it is not useable to provide mechanical power as a single service, due to the complicated shape of the wave form when you add out of phase voltages together, but is ok to drive the heaters, they have no mechanical efficiency requirement
A 2 phase 110v heater it means 3kw can be supplied without a 30 amp circuit
but it becomes difficult to use a single phase 220-240v transformer to provide 2x110v 90degree 2 phase current unless you specially buy one in. .
High power applications in 220-240v are generally supplied by 415v 3 phase 60deg supplies,

Any transformer would be onsellable at the end of your posting, to your replacement, who would doubtless be in the same boat as you, with a heap of 'stuff' that needs to run.

UK Aus NZ may be sources of transformers, or dryers to suit.
check with Australian UK NZ suppliers as well as local Indian ones, as those countries are also nominal 240v single phase home suplies and they may have (1) the dryer, or (2)the transformer to suit the 110 2 phase dryer

USA to UK CDJ800

Unless you want to spend some serious money, a multi unit step down will run you about US$300 or so. If you buy 2 or 3 individual converter's, your looking at about US$40-70 for a good quality model. Besides, it's better this way. If one of the converter shorts, only 1 unit will be affected.
