Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

We have a VIZIO VP422 HDTV10A. It would not turn on and we noticed the logo was no lit up so we unplugged it and plugged it back in and the Vizio Logo fades from green to black. We tried several different outlets and the same thing happens. Is the problem the power supply? Thanks, Laz

I have taken the back panel off and identified 3 capacitors that seem to have a slight bulge on top. I took the whole board to radioshack to show them the capacitors and i was told they dont sell anything that big.

    220uf 450wv 105c (there are 2 of these)

    470uf 100wv 105c

I was looking online for electrolytic capacitors and keep finding snap in capacitors for the 450volt size.... will the snap in capacitors work?

    Thanks,

    Laz

I tried to get a few local tv repair shops to sell me those capacitors. One of the repair men told me that it is very rare for those high voltage capacitors to go bad. I felt the tops and they are ever so slightly bulged, but that could just be my interpretation as I didnt even know what a capacitor was yesterday.

Is this guy just trying to get me to pay for service or is it really rare for those high voltage capacitors to go bad?

If it is rare, should I just get a new power supply board?

Side note- this whole TV issue came about after a day of bad thunder storms... there could have been some type of power surge...would that event be rare enough to kill these high voltage capacitors?

    Thanks,

    Laz

So, I put in a new power supply board today and the TV still does the same thing. I plug it in, the Visio logo lights up green and then it fades to black within 20 seconds.

Thoughts on what else I can do?

    Thanks,
    Laz

    Hello,

I ordered a new power supply board and installed it. I plugged in the TV and it did the same thing as before. The Visio light turned green and then faded to black.

    What should I try next?

    Thanks,

    Laz

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

Hello, yes, snap in capacitors will work as long as it is the same voltage.

    Hello,

Usually, the high voltage capacitor get defective when excess power enters into the Power supply board. It can damage the capacitor.

I would suggest you change the power supply board because there might be some other components on the power supply board the has gone bad as a result of the surge.

    I hope you understand this.........

    Take care.

You say that the Vizio Logo light up. If there is no back light; how did you see it. Have you a special eternal eye?
actually there is back light. Without it, you can't see the logo.
Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
Before going further; try a hard reset first. If it does not help you, replace the main digital board. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here.

What is voltage supposed to be for P on pin on power supply?

The power on is usually 3.3vdc, but on some sets it's at 0v to turn on the set, and 5v when the set is off. Your power supply maybe ground activated. If you replaced the main board, then the power supply is your problem

Vizio TV 2006 vx32Lhdtv doesnt work.

I had the same problem after having a Vizio for 2 and a half years. I left the room for a minute, i came back and the screen went black. There was still power to the unit and you could see that the back light was working, just no picture, no sound, and you couldn't use any of the buttons. The only way to turn it off was to unplug it. It would then start up, with the Vizio logo going from orange to white, and then do the same thing all over, no pic or sound.

HOW I FIXED MINE:Look through the back vents for a white light to make sure the backlight still works. I ordered a new "main PCB" from tigerdirectparts.com (you can also use searspartsdirect.com). This is the circuit board with all of the inputs on it (hdmi, cable, etc.) I opened it up, disconnected the old one, put in a new one and now it works fine. I used both serial numbers on the board to search for it online. It cost me $144 to do it, but that's better than $450 for a new TV. My tv is the vx32l hdtv10a. I hope that helps.

For me the part number was either (depending on the vendor) : 0171 2272 2174 or it was 3632 0212 0150. Check your circuit and see if any of those numbers match up.
