First, the color wheel should not operate if the lamp does not come on; if YOU replaced the wheel yourself double check something.

There are two cables from the color wheel, one is a typical plug and the other is a flat ribbon cable, the ribbon cable has connections only on one side as it plugs in: it is very easy to plug it in backwards in which case lamp will NOT come on at all.

Well the lamp has nothing to do with colour. If it is a DLP set it could be a malfunctioning colour wheel or the video processing board.

How do I replace the Colour wheel

color wheel is relatively easy to replace. a few screws hold in place after removing cover, has 1 ribbon cable & one plug in cable, usually not difficult to unplug & re-plug new one, but keep fingers off the color wheel glass.

I replaced lamp on my toshiba 50hm66 tv and now i got a black and white picture

Hello
As it is a DLP projection TV, there will be a colour wheel to filter colur. If the whell does not spins at all, or spins out of synchronisation, there will be no colour to the picture. Just check the clour wheel. If needy, replace it. Clean it with cleaning solution. If you don't have eneough knoledge in alaigning the colour wheel, just get help fro an expecienced service technician. There is an RPM [Rotation Per Minute] counter to count the number of rotation of the colour wheel. If this sensor has some fault with, the colour wheel won't syncronise to its original speed what it should be, resulting out of colour picture. OK.

Samsung dlp hls6186w, picture has darkened, could it be the lamp or is it the colour wheel??... tv is making sounds...I thought it was the fan, the fan looks okay??? It also shuts down once and a while...

The lamp is the only thing that will cause the picture to go darker. According to the model you have the lamp part number is BP96-01472A. The noise you hear could possibly be the color wheel itself. The way to tell is when you turn off the TV the lamp stays on for about 10 seconds longer. Once the lamp shuts off if that noise goes away then it is a bad color wheel. Any noises past that would be a fan. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...
