WHAT HD & SIZE RECOMMENDED FOR MY GATEWAY 500S PC WITH OS XP?

You cannot use a SATA (serial ATA HDD in this machine. You need a PATA (parallel ATA) HDD, also known as IDE, ULTRA IDE, ULTRA ATA. This has a 40-pin ribbon connector & a 4-pin power connector.
Sizes generally available would be 80GB up to 250GB, although very few PATA drives are now sold since SATA is the new standard.

Can i put a hdd from a aspire 5610 in to a5580

1) Acer Aspire 5610 series Notebook PC, uses a standard sized
SATA laptop harddrive.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acer-Aspire-5610-SATA-Hard-Drive-Caddy-w-Screws-/380170405559

[ Standard size laptop harddrive; 2.5 inches across in width. ( 2 and a half inches, or 63.5mm ]

2) Acer Aspire 5580 uses an IDE (PATA) harddrive, that is standard laptop size.

http://www.upgradecomputermemory.com/ram.cfm//memory/a/Acer/AcerAspire-Notebook-Series/Aspire5580Notebook/80GB-Notebook-Hard-Drive-for-the-Acer-Aspire-5580-Notebook.html

[ Scroll down to the subheading - Interface: ATA-100 ]

It isn't just the harddrive caddy that is different.

The two technologies are different, IDE (PATA) and SATA, therefore the interface is also.

[ Interface:
In this example I am referring to the pin connector, the harddrive plugs into ]

Parallel ATA,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA#IDE_and_ATA-1

Serial ATA,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

Adapter for the SATA harddrive (5610) to the IDE (PATA ) interface in the 5580 laptop?
Won't work.

1) The technologies are different.
2) There is a Chipset, or more than one, for this bus controller. The 5580 doesn't have a SATA version.

( Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit )

This would make one think, "Hey, I'll just buy an IDE (PATA) 2.5 harddrive."

Nope.

Once Windows Vista is installed it is a 'Bear' to write XP over it.
There is a Correct procedure. This is left to an experienced person.
(Even an experienced tech may have problems)

Also, IF you do get XP to write over Vista, you may be required to Activate again. (Not register, activate)

To explain further;
When Windows is installed on a computer, hash values are assigned to certain major hardware components.

Some examples may be the Processor, Motherboard, Harddrive, and graphics chipset.

More specifically for the Motherboard, it is the motherboard chipset, and the BIOS program. (Version and date)

Change any two of these hardware components, and Windows may want to be activated again.

Suggest new IDE (PATA) harddrive for the 5580, and use the Restoration Disk.

Don't have one?
Computer manufacturers stopped including a Restoration CD Disk.
(I do believe they have started again, though)

Many users felt uncomfortable trying to repair their computer, took it to a shop, and never bothered using the disk.
Many lost the disk.

Let's say the disk cost around $1.
Take that times 50,000 computers or so. The computer manufacturer is saving money, not including a disk the majority, seems to not want to use.

The computer manufacturers started including a restoration partition, on the harddrive. (That's nice unless you have graphics problems, and can't see what is going on)

When the computer is new, and the owner starts the computer for the first time, there is a pop up asking if you wish to make a Backup.
THIS, is your Restoration Disk.

The new owner is ONLY asked ONE time. If the owner clicks on 'Never show this again', the opportunity is GONE.

What to do?
New IDE (PATA) harddrive, see what it costs a shop to put Vista (Same version) on it.

OR,
Buy a new Vista, or Windows 7 genuine copy, and install it.
HOWEVER, before trying to install Win7, make SURE there are drivers for Win7 available.

If not, DO NOT install Win7.

(Microsoft makes ONE master disk of an Operating System.
{ And version } From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer )

Summary:
1) New IDE (PATA) harddrive
2) Have Vista installed, or see if drivers are available, and install Win7.

For clarification on anything I have stated, or additional questions, please post in a Comment.

I asked this a few days ago; , I have a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N 160 GB Hard Drive in a HP compaq presario SR 1617CL I want to replace it with a larger HD, 500GB or 1TB. Can I replace it with a...

Yes, either of these drives will work. The cache is not all that important it is just where data is stored temporarily in case you have to access it again soon after a file is written to the hard drive. The best thing you could do in this case is see if your motherboard has a sata connection which I would assume it does and buy a sata hard drive. It will be much faster than either of those drives, just make sure you also get a sata power adapter if your power supply doesn't already have one and a sata cable.

Just bought a gateway solo 9300 from flea market cheap, and hard drive is missing. is it pata, ata, sata, ide,? Also want to upgrade ram. one site says maximum 288 ram and another says 544 ram.

The harddrive is 2.5".
Look at the HDD connector. If it consist of 44 holes in 2 rows by 22 on a row, it is parallel ATA, also known as pata, ata and IDE.
If it consist of two L-shaped holes with pins inside, it is serial ATA, also known as SATA.
About the ram you better go with the laptop to a computer store and test before buy.

Dvd drive replacement

Get a PATA also called IDE drive. They are cheap and will work great in your box.You don't need the speed of SATA for a DVD drive.Even though they make SATA drives. Pata's data tramsission rareis much faster than even the fastest DVD. You have a four device potential for you IDE on your motherboard and only a two device potential for your SATA. Save the second SATA port in case you want to add a second hard drive some day

Need to install my new dvd writer on my dell dimension 9200 pc. The plugs are different. now what?

If the plugs are different most likely you bought a SATA drive. If your MB doesnt support SATA then there really isnt any use for that drive, i would return it and purchase an IDE drive, chances are thats what you have. Good Luck!!!

Difference between ata and sata hard disks

ATA, or (PATA) hard drives use the older "seatbelt" 40 or 80 pin ribbon interface cable, whereas SATA is fairly new using the small, thin interface cable found in most computers manafactured in the last 12-18 months, hope it helps
