Use port forwarding or port triggering in your router to make sure that all of the appropriate ports for Xbox Live are open. To do this, you would need to make the Xbox IP address static first.

portforward.com has an easy to follow instructions on how to do this for many many different types of routers. It even gives you the instructions on how to specifically set the ports for Xbox Live.

How to play xbox games on a new xbox360 slim 4gb

I am assuming you are referring to playing original Xbox games on your new 360. Halo was the only game from the box that you can play directly without needing to download the patch to play but supposed newer systems have the capability to play more directly out of the box.

Other backwards compatable games can be played but you will need a samll patch for each game. The game if playable will automatically attepmt to download the patch from xbox live. So you will need to have your Xbox 360 conected to live or have a patch disk. (which is available via the Xbox Magazine disk or can be downloaded online and burned to a disk)

Here is a link for Xbox games that are playable on the 360: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360

"You can play some original Xbox games on your Xbox 360 console, if you have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive and the latest console software.

Information about how to update your console software is available on our Xbox support website:

Every time I try to play my xbox 360 console says I need an update to play the game. What is the update and where do I get it?

If you have xbox live and you are connected to the internet your xbox will prompt you to update your game/console. At this point you have to be connected to the internet. At this prompt it should give you the option to download and install the update. Choose this option and it will start automatically and finish in time. DO NOT TURN YOUR XBOX OFF. Once this is done you should be able to play the game and your console/game will be updated.

How do you update your xbox 360

How To Get the Updates
For most gamers, keeping the XBOX 360 up to date is pretty easy, especially if they've taken advantage of the numerous online components through XBOX Live!. When a gamer is signed in to the Live! service, the system automatically checks for new updates. If one is available, you'll be prompted to update. Most updates take 3 to 5 minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection.

If you've never updated your console, but have access to a high speed internet connection, getting your updates through the web is pretty simple and straightforward. Unfortunately, Microsoft has made online updates unavailable to those who have not registered for the XBOX Live! service. Most folks that don't like or participate in online gaming wouldn't normally think of signing up for XBOX Live!.

The Live! service has two levels of membership. The gold level allows you to play games online with others, an enhanced friends list, the online marketplace, and more, but is only available to those who subscribe monthly or purchase prepaid subscription packs. Getting a silver membership is free, and allows you to receive all system updates, but this also means you'll need to give some personal information to Microsoft. I've read through their terms of use and privacy statements pretty carefully, and even though it doesn't contain any major clauses that would cause me to be concerned, I would have appreciated an option to get online updates without having to give out my name, telephone number, and personal address.
8b5644ba4a76476f--54c34f3a-11972598fb2--76ab-628131945-w580h580.jpgYou can sign up for an XBOX Live! account directly through the 360 dashboard. Instructions for doing so are located here. Once you've successfully created an account (which may take a few attempts if the service bombs out on you), you should be notified immediately that a new update is available.
Not everyone has high-speed Internet access, and those that don't participate in online gaming may not have their Internet access accessible from their living rooms. Yes, Microsoft offers a Wi-Fi bridge for the 360, but most folks are not going to cough up $100 bucks to download an update. Besides, that still wouldn't solve the problem for dial-up users.
Microsoft has made one update available as a direct download from Xbox.com, which allows you to play more original XBOX games on your 360. If you don't care about 1080p or any other feature that they've made available, you can download the update and burn it to a CD. To update your 360, just stick that CD into the drive. It's unfortunate that Microsoft doesn't make all updates available in this manner, which would benefit a great deal of users that own high-tech consoles, but have low-tech web connections.
If you're in the dial-up group, there are a few ways you can get the full updates to your system. One option is to grab your console and drag it to a friend or family member's house in order to download updates. It's certainly a pain, but fortunately major updates are few and far between.

8b5644ba4a76476f--54c34f3a-11972598fb2--76a9-87690626-w580h580.jpgIf you're technically inclined, you can use a Windows 98SE, 2000, XP, or Vista computer to share your dial-up connection with your XBOX 360 via ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). It can be a little tricky to set up for the novice, but fortunately there's plenty of useful guides to walk you through the process. Updates will take a while to download this way, but it will prevent you from having to pack up your 360 and drag it to your neighbor's house just to download the latest updates.
Final Thoughts
On the surface, it may seem inconvenient to make the casual 360 owner jump through hoops to update a video game machine, but the move to an upgradeable platform will allow video game makers to adapt their existing technologies to ways that will improve your experience long after your initial purchase. Those who are up to date in the latest gaming hardware, but relics when it comes to computers and Internet access, will find updating their 360s much more inconvenient than those with ultrafast connections and whole house LAN. It's unfortunate that there's been less effort to provide system updates via alternative means to the Internet.
In the end, if you're always looking for ways to get more out of the gear you already own, these updates are a sure fire way to make your 360 investment seem better and better every day.

All of a sudden when we start Call of Duty world at war it says there is an update for the game. Chose update and it then says that it cannot download the update and signs out of xbox live. You cannot not...

check playing with this disc on any other Xbox 360 connected to live, ideally the disc should not have problem since the problem you are facing could be with saving or downloading of the specific update required to play game online on xbox live which is mostly related to updated playlists.

If it still does not work, try erasing the saves for this particular game from your Xbox 360 HDD in case you are okay to forego the game progress / XP gained for the offline campaign play.

Bought Lips recently and played it fine first

The game was released broken. There is an update on xbox live that fixes it. So you pay twice, once for the game and once for xbox live. If you don't have xbox live or no internet you simply can't play. In other words you got robbed. Nice scam huh?

My son saved money and bought a Xbox 360 Arcade. He did not realize that he could not play his xbox games on his new system. Is there an upgrade to allow old xbox games to be played on on the xbox 360

Some game are compatible with the new xbox 360. They are called backwards compatible and you do need to flash upgrade the OS on the new xbox 360 system.

You need to go to the xbox website and go to support and download the flash update then burn it to disk and put it on the xbox to update the software. Again not all old games are compatible with the new xbox system. If your buying used games like I do make sure it says bc next to the title before buying them.
Here is the link to the upgrade

Do u have to pay to go online on the xbox 360

Hello there.

On the Xbox 360, you'll have two choices of service level: Xbox Live Silver and Xbox Live Gold. Xbox Live Silver will offer limited Xbox Live functionality at no cost, while the Gold package will be a fully functional pay service.

The Xbox Live Silver service means you can connect your Xbox 360 console to a broadband Internet connection and get functionality right out of the box without having to pay any amount of money.

With Xbox Live Silver you can:
  • Create an online Gamer Profile
  • Access the Xbox Live Marketplace
  • Engage in voice and text messaging
  • Talk to a single friend at a time using voice chat
  • Receive video messages from Gold level members
  • Access massively multiplayer online games (additional fees may apply)
The Xbox Live Gold is similar to the current paid Xbox Live service. The Xbox Live Gold service delivers the complete online connection package. With Xbox Live Gold you have all the features of Silver level, and additionally:

  • Play multiplayer games online
  • Video chat
  • Multiplayer online tournaments
  • Participate in Xbox Live online programming, such as Game with Fame, Play and Win, and Prime Time activities.
Hope this clarifies things for you.
