Hi addidaguy30,

Yes the disc reading problem on the PS3 is massive!

Let me run through what is going on and how you can fix it:

Cause:

It is the laser that needs readjusting in order to fix this problem. The good news is that the drive will still work as long as you readjust the laser in most cases - so you don't need to replace the drive!

Solution:

You can send it in for Repair and they will fix it for you - although this will cost about $150 in a repair bill and you can expect to wait for about 4 weeks to get your console back.

Quicker Solution:

It is possible to fix the PS3 games reading error from home because as mentioned above all you are doing is readjusting the laser.

Now if you want to go down this route check out the reviews of the top guides and see what they offer first below:

Hope this helps!

I just bought an old 40gb Backwards compatible ps3 it powers on,I can go on line but it will not play any games or movies,It has a little disc looking thig spinning in the top right corner of the screen...

It could be a bad optics lens, or a bad main deck board. Another thing is, is that ony the 20gb, 60gb, and 80gb are backwards compatible. I would make the person whomevere you bought it from give your money back.

Cant eject disc and red light keep blinking

You have the infamous YLOD, aka. Yellow Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips) You will need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. Do not try to attempt repairs seen on the internet yourself as some would suggest. You could make things much worse and render the unit totally unresponsive. The repair process takes about 3 hours.

IT CAN BE FIXED*

FOR THE DISC THAT'S STUCK INSIDE?

If you have a unit that is not backwards compatible, any non 60g or 80g then you can retrieve your disc.

Power off the unit using the toggle switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and eject your disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not the backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the memory card slots.

My PS3 does not play DVD's but it works fine with everything else, what wrong?? Also I should mention that I have a Backwards Compatible 60GB PS3...Again everything works but when I put in a DVD it either...

Many users also reported their PS3 won't play DVD or game disc, or can't eject out : The bluray drive need some fixes or replaced. If you send back to Sony or other people to repair, it's just waste your time and money - because the same symptoms will be back again. The best way is learning the repair skills of yourself. There is a PS3 DIY Repair Guide - It's video and text guide that let you know how to open the console, make some minor fixes and recover it at last. The author show his professional repair skills that let you step by step to hands on the repair job. Don't worry your ability to do such things : You will be amazing at last that you can do that yourself. The repair guide cost you not much but helpful. The best part is you can help your friends too!

Is there anyway of getting older version of ps3 os that is backwards compatible

If I understand your request, backwards compatibility can not be achieved by installing a different version of the PS3 OS.
You have to buy a 20GB, 60GB or 80GB model that supports backward compatibility.
A quick search of Google Products turns up a bunch of backward compatible PS3s for sale.

Put a playstation 1 game in my ps3 an it wont eject out it beeps twice

Currently the problem i see here is that you may want to get your disc out first and then check if your PS3 is working fine

Here's what you need to do to eject the disc:

Hold Eject button down for 6 seconds (while PS3 is on)

This should force eject the disc, let me know if this helps

I am not sure which version of PS3 you are having and which ps1 game you are playing, so please check about backward compatibility of your game here

Will PS3 games play on PS2? Thank you

most ps3's unfortunately arent backwards compatible, however the 60gb consoles were made to be so. otherwise they can have chips put in them by people while being semi-legal is cheap and works well. so either have the 60gb console, or get a shark chip from your local supplier.
