Pixel shaders are required for almost every single game out these days. As cards progressed pixel shaders progressed *** well, and this can be tracked by the pixel shader version on your graphics card. They started to come out around the time of nvidias geforce 3 series or ait's radeon 8000 series. If you have a graphics card any ealier then those models, you most likly will not have them.
They are built into the hardware, so an upgrade is the only option.
