My emerson microwave #mw8999rd shoots out fire from a silver piece of cardboard thats on the righthand inside of my microwave oven. whats with that?

There is electrical problem in your microwave heating circuit. This is a fire hazard and you should stop using this microwave and unplug from the outlet. This is not something you can fix and the fuse does not protect your system anymore. The best choice is to purchase a new one and throw this away.

On the inside top right side of the microwave there was a cardboard cover held on by 4 corner points. The cardboard has fallen out now as it has come unsecured from the points holding it in place. Is it...

That's the waveguide cover.

If your waveguide cover is burned or damaged, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

For the sunbeam microwave sgb8901, do you take off the cover over the oven air vent? It's inside the oven on the right hand side- it looks like a rectanglar silver colored piece of cardboard.

I am also having this same problem i dont know the solution yet, but when you figure it out please let me know, or if i figure out i will repost =]

My microwave just started to arc. Is the waveguide cover the metal piece inside the oven? Should I try to remove it to clean both sides with steel wool?

No the wave guide is usually a porous material that almost looks like a light colored cardboard piece. Sound as if the stirrer plate is waht you are seeing. Make sure M/W is clean inside completly. Any build up of grease can cause this. Also make sure to check for chipped areas and if there are use an appliance touch up to cover the bare metal areas. A good cleaning will usually take care of the arcing tho.

Arcing inside microwave

unless you are familiar with these, leave it alone. Over time small particles of food become carbonized inside the oven, hence the electrical display. the solution is to clean it after every use.

It sounds like what you are describing is called a "waveguide cover". You can purchase a replacement from a local parts supplier, or on-line at www.repairclinic.com. It is very easy to replace.

Take a piece of cardboard and cut one out. You probably won't be able to find what you're looking for.
