Have you pressed F8..as you start up your lappy.......if not try that..because you might not be getting in before your boot up in time..

What is the f2,f8, r f12 want work? only the Ctrl+ Alt+ del that wroks

F2 usually takes you to the BIOS setup screen, you need to hit the keys as soon as you power up.

F12 selects on a Dell instant boot menu to select booting from CD-ROM, USB, etc rather than the BIOS options.

F8 goes to safe mode start up for windows, this must be done before the windows logo comes up (ie when it is a black screen).

Control - Alt -Delete Keys together can be used any time, after windows boots as it tells it to re-boot the computer, back to start up.

This is called 'the blue screen of death!' It could be hard drive, or memory or other things. Try starting up from OFF and tapping f12 - this should bring up the DELL Diagnostic program. If that fails, have you tried using the DELL restore disk? What Windows are you using?

"error loading operating system" message on dell inspiron 1420 laptop

only way to bypass this is use a recovery disk to boot from and then perhaps the issue will manifest itself

otherwise, it's the dreaded re format step

The computer starts booting up just fine. the windows logo comes up with the blue line underneath that goes across. Then a blue screen flashes for almost no time and the computer starts rebooting all over...

Hi there,
May be you should keep tapping F12 Instead of F8 and select the hard disk and start tapping F8 that might take you to safe mode, try to do a repair installation if it is still not working may a clean installation would help!! However post back if you see any good in the first two Steps.
Thank you. Cheers!!

How do i get my toshiba portege to boot from a usb flash drive. When i power it on it goes to starting windows screen (Windows 2000) then to blue screen for split second then restarts the computer I bought...

Before the windows logo comes up, there should be a prompt to go into setup. Usually this involves pressing escape, F2, F8, F10, or F12, depending on the machine.
Once you're in the setup screen (it should look like a stereotypical image from a 1980's computer), there will be an an option titled "Boot". In here you can set the order of bootable devices your computer checks. Set USB to be above your hard drive. There are always instructions on the bottom of the screen on how to change options and navigate around.

I have an Dell inspiron 1525, I recently updated either my windows or my windows secerity program (can't remember) anyways it told me to restat my pc. So I did i'm guessing it was never done down loading...

It sounds like it is confused and has lost some of the registry entries, like we would have an index to find the files. Hopefully they are all still there.
Press F8 as it boots up, this should get you into a sub menu that allows you to use Safe Mode or Recovery. Try safe mode first as Windows will search for the "missing" files and repair the registry. If that doesn't work try Recover and follow the prompts. (That may only work under F11).
Hope that fixes it.

Monitor won't stay on. Error message comes up that says "no input signal", then monitor goes out.

Problem with the monitor, monitor cable, or video output. For monitor, if you have more than one input, make sure it's set to the correct one. Try a different cable. Try a different monitor. Check your video card settings--if you see the BIOS bootup screen while it's coming up then the Windows splash screen, then monitor blanks out, it's a Windows display setting. Boot into safe mode, then change settings--
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected (the top option)
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • When you are finished with troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
