My glasses & silverwear have streaks & spots on them. I have a water softener & don't use jetdry since we were told that would be the cause of the streaking/spotting. I have new glasses & silverware still same problem.

First off whoever told you jet dry causes streaks has not been repairing dishwasher like I have for the last 40 years. All I will say is use the Jet Dry even with a water softener. Buy the little hanging mini-basket type ones and replace them as they are consumed.
Water flow problems are what cause streaks. The water flow problems can be caused by several things:
1. Clogged spray arm holes (Clean wash arms)
2. Sump inlets that are blocked with debris or plastic (Clean inlets)
3. POOR DRAIN FUNCTION ( a. Inspect all parts of the drain going backward from the sink connection
1) The sink connection is uaually at the side of garbage disposal. Remove the hose from the sink connection and clean out the port.
2) The AIR-GAP is the where 75% of the drain restrictions mainfest. Lift off the Air-Gap cover then unscrew the inner cap nut NOTING the installed position of the inner cap because you can only install it ONE WAY. Lift off the cap and remove an debris inside. Use a flashlight and inspect for any debris deep inside the Air Gap,
3) Inspect the Drain hose from the Air Gap to the Dishwasher drain hose connection for any kinks or folds. If you note wither a kink or a fold take a stick over the outside of the hose like you were putting on a splint.
4) Remove the drain hose from the dishwasher connection and inspect for debris. Clean as necessary. Just note there is power under the dishwasher that can reach out and grab you so make sure the power is off before working under the dishwasher.

Reassemble everything power it up, use the Jet Dry and let me know how the dishes turn out.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

I found this on ehow I believe it will help. How to Troubleshoot Dishwasher Residue By Dale Yalanovsky eHow Contributor

Dishwater residue is a fairly common occurrence, and several things can cause it. Even the newest dishwashers may leave residue, and it might have nothing to do with the actual dishwasher function itself. However, there are things you can do to prevent, limit or completely remove dishwasher residue during every washing cycle.

Other People Are Reading

  1. Detergent Residue
    • Modern phosphate-free detergents are the main culprits when it comes to detergent residue. After every wash, many leave a slight whitish residue behind. After several washings, the residue becomes caked on and leaves a noticeable white tint to your dishes. Some dishwasher detergent brands are better than others, and either minimize residue or do not leave any. Once residue is present, however, the only way to remove it is by hand scrubbing or scraping.
    Hard-Water Residue
    • Hard-water residue comes from non-softened water from your hot water tank. Non-softened water leaves a white tint on dishes, but no amount of scrubbing will remove it. Only by wiping a small patch of the dish with vinegar or lemon juice will you be able to ascertain whether the white residue left is hard water or detergent. The slight acidic action of the vinegar or lemon juice removes hard-water stains, but they have no effect on detergent residue.
    Greasy Residue
    • If the dishes feel greasy when they come out of the dishwasher freshly washed, you are dealing with a greasy residue. There are two main reasons for this: either the detergent is not an effective grease remover, or the hot water inside of the dishwasher, either from the hot water tank or the dishwasher's heating elements, is not hot enough. Boosting the hot water temperature on the water tank may solve the problem, and a second wash cycle may be needed for the dishes. A preventive measure of running the dishwasher empty with a full load of detergent also removes the residue inside of the dishwasher.
    Streaking and Spotting Residue
    • If you have spotting or streaking on your dishes, that may be a sign you need a rinse agent. Many modern dishwashers recommend a rinse agent to prevent spotting or streaking, and without one, your dishes will never be crystal clear or streak-free. The next time you do a dishwasher load, add a rinse agent. If the dishes come out spot- and streak-free, the problem is solved.

White film especially on ziploc containers and utensils. Glasses come out spotted and clear glass dishes are streaked with a white film

Hi

White film deposits are observed if water is hard or when you are using more detergent than needed, try filling detergent cup half way. Try using white vinegar after the wash cycle is complete, run a complete cycle. Also turn down the heat on the hot water fed to the dishwasher. Try using water softener for better results.
You can also add vinegar in the final rinse cycle.

Soap residue on glasses & silverware

Try changing the type and brand of detergent as some are better than others. Could the water softener need service? If you wash/rinse any dishes in the sink, do they have the same problem? Good luck!

Fisher & Paykel leaves film

When a film is left on the dishes, the problem is almost always a failed heating element. Dishwasher detergent requires a high temp to fully disolve and be effective as a a cleaner (solvent.) When the element does not come on during the wash cycle, the detergent is never activated.

It is ~possible~ that the thermister has failed, but some sort of error code should be reported if that was the cause.

Good Luck! Please report back what you find. OK?

Dishes not clean

It would help to know the make and model of your dishwasher?
Look for a rinse aid location on the inside of the door. If you find it, either use white vinegar or buy a rinse aid (like JetDry).
If you do not have a rinse aid cap in the door, you can buy some JetDry little baskets that you hang from the upper rack. Good Luck!

Dishwasher leaves dishes with white residue and walls are flakey

Sounds like a case of hard water and mineral deposits, try Jetdry, or even CLR from home depot and see if it will clean them off.

You could also get a water softener, that will stop all mineral deposits in your home.

Disdwaser leaves spots on dishes

You simply need to use a product called Jetdry for a couple of weeks until all the traces of factory solvents etc. work out of the machine. Sometimes if you have a really high concentration of particulates in your water the problem will continue and that is what the Jetdry is for. It isn't the new dishwashers problem it is the local water. One permanent solution is to hook up a water purifier/softner in order to clean the water up. Jetdry is used in many areas and is perfectly safe. Good Luck this will help.
