Power on but does not read on coputer

If the drive doesn't show up in Computer or My computer right click on the computer Icon either on your desktop or in your start menu and select Manage. Say Yes or Allow to the security window that pops up, then when the management console opens click on disk management on the left and wait for your drives to show up. If the drive shows up in the list as RAW but is showing about 500GB of unallocated space refer to the below article. If the drive shows up as the wrong size or doesn't show up, let me know your location(Country, State, City) and I will refer you to a nearby professional facility to have your data recovered in a proper lab.

There are two normal reasons this will happen. The first is a failure in the drive enclosure, the second is a failure of the drives PCB(circuit board). There's a simple way to test this but it will void the drives warranty so first you have to decide if your data is worth more than the drive.

You will need to buy a new enclosure at a computer store, ask for a 3.5 inch Sata hard drive enclosure. Once you get it home follow the directions to install your hard drive in the enclosure. Connect the drive enclosure to your computer and check if it shows up properly. If it does you're done, if it doesn't try the next steps to determine the type of failure.

If the drive shows up in Computer or My Computer but says it's unformatted you will need a simple software recovery tool to get your files back. Go to and follow the instruction in my Formatted Drive article to finish getting your files back.

Again, if you find the DIY methods will not work, resond here with your location and I can refer you to a nearby recovery facility that can assist you further.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Will not power on. no lights or anything

Assuming you're lucky the AC adapter may be all that's failed. If your les lucky something in the enclosure has failed, worst case the drive itself is faulty.

You can eliminate and test the first to possibilities by simply going to your local PC shop and having the techs there test you drive in a new enclosure with a fresh power supply, if it works, buy the new enclosure and thank them for their time. If not...

Let me know and include you location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to a nearby facility that can assist you in recovering your files.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Yep - Me too

Replacement power supplies are expensive and like hens teeth to find. You can however buy a complete enclosure at pretty much any PC store and transfer the drive from your existing WD enclosure to a new one of your choosing that will come with it's own power supply cord.

If the drive fails to work in the new enclosure you may have more troubles than just power, if this is the case reply back with your Country, State and City and I will direct yuo to a nearby Data Recovery Facility.

My wd elements hard drive of 1 terabyte will not turn on

Usually if this happens it's either a dead AC adapter or a failed circuit board inside. If you have nothing crucial on the drive take it back to the store you bought it from or contact Western Digital for warranty.

If you do have crucial files and don't want to loose them by simply warrantying the drive, take it to your local PC store and void your warranty by having the techs there move you hard drive into a new enclosure for testing. If it works in the new enclosure buy it and be on your way. If it doesn't your problems are more severe and will require some specialized assistance from a Data Recovery Pro. If this is the case ask the techs to place the HDD in a anti-static bag then reply to me with your Country, State, City and I will refer you to a nearby Pro who can access your files and save them for you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Mines the same, 1TB drive. turn on, blinks once then nothing.

Despite the lack of information what you have provided sounds like a failed drive or drive enclosure.

As a rule, either the enclosure or drive circuitry failing will cause this type of issue. Also driver problems can simulate this type of failure. So, to correct the problem, first try the drive on a second computer. If it works there the driver is simply corrupt on your system, report back and I can give you detailed instructions.

Second, if it doesn't work on the other computer, try taking it to your local computer store and asking them to test the hard drive in a different enclosure. If it works, buy the enclosure and you're done.

Finally, if neither of those works, you will likely need a data recovery pro, again respond back including your country, state and city and I can refer you to a nearby facility.

Hope this helps Fixya,

Broken Fan

You should be able to open up your external hard drive enclosure, find the right size fan, and order another one from almost any online store for cheap. You may even be able to go to some computer store nearby you and you may be able to get one there.

Acer 5100 laptop mouse/keyboard not working

Your local electronics store has a USB keyboard and mouse port dongle. Or if you have a USB keyboard or mouse. Once you get functionality, choose Start>Run and type in "CMD" without quotes and hit enter. You will get a black box with a command line, enter:

chkdsk /r

Windows will inform your the disk is in use and cannot perform, you choose yes and it will do so upon the next restart. Restart the machine and let it run the disk check utility. Place your ear on the palmrests (usually where hard drive is located inside bottom half of laptop). Listen for sudden hard clicks, similar to huccups. When it makes those noises the hard drive light usually stays solid, afterwards the hard drive will repeat the same "bad sector check" sound. Finally, if you notice the process taking more than a few hours, your disk is in trouble. Recover the data using an external drive bay (also at electronics store) and place the drive inside the bay and recoverit to another computer. Order a new hard drive, intall, and re transfer your files by any media or network.
